Realistic price to negotiate with a Seat dealer?

Hey,

A car down the Seat garage is going for £7995 asking price:

Seat Leon TDi FR (Yellow)
56 Plate
46k miles
1 year warranty
"Full Seat Service & Check" -hmm.

I would ideally like a minimum of £500 off this for insurance, tax etc. as I have around £8k to spend.

The car is arriving at the dealership on Friday, and I'm going to look at it on Saturday and if all is well, I'm hoping for a quick buy.

I am also giving cash, no part ex, which I'm hoping will help.

I was thinking about offering £7250 for it, and then will probably get worked up to a reasonable price. Is this an acceptable price to offer as I'm not too sure. I found a car on the web for the same asking price, however it was a 57 plate with 40k miles - however this was a long way away.

Going by Autotrader this is a realistic dealer price,Make sure timing belt has been changed and anything due has been done as I have just had to replace wheel bearings pads and discs on my 08.
It really depends what they bought it in at and how much they need to do on it. Realistically my opinion £2 -300 if youre lucky, hopefully more,If you were trading it in you can be sure it would be considerably less than the asking price

all depends on how keen they are to shift it, and how much interest they're expecting on it. Doubt you will get 750 quid off, but as my dad has always said to me, 'if you don't ask, you don't get!'. He regrets that phrase everytime i need some money... :D

It is an earlier car, but 1 year warranty and only 46k on the clock from a main Seat Dealer I think realistically justifies the price.

As said by Subc, no matter what age or mileage this car might be, I would want to cambelt etc done at this price even if they tell you it doesn't need doing (My 2010 Leon Fr has a main dealer sticker in the top corner saying 120,000 for the cambelt change !!),

Also check tyres (it could still be on its original tyres if its been driven so little in 6 years) and pads and discs and also see if there have been any warranty recalls - injectors etc.

I suppose the only downside in some peoples eyes will be the yellow colour - again yellow is much a very personal choice (I've got a yellow motorbike!)

I don't think you are going to get it down to the price you are looking to pay as thats nearly another 10% their stickered window price. I think if you manage to meet half way that would be acceptable, but really depends on the cambelt situation. I think if you probably paid the asking price including the cambelt change and 1 years road tax I don't think you'd be far wrong.

it is always a bit of a problem with vehicles like this from a main dealer, as most tend not to keep stock over 3-4 years old.

Make sure the warranty will cover the injectors failing etc

I'd be interested to see what deal you come to !

Thanks guys. Well I'm taking my Dad along who is very good at talking money, we got £800 off our previous car due to showing loads of interest, but walking away when they didnt meet what we wanted.

The only think I'm worried about is this "service" that they do to the car. Like you say, unless I ask I seriously doubt they would change the cambelt and break pads unless they really needed doing. Its an interesting one, and I have/will be doing loads of research on this kinda thing.

Good advice from all above, the Tyres takes me back to when I bought a Rover from a Main Dealer in Inverness 112 point Check before I bought it, couldnt go wrong,or so I thought took the wheels off to do some Waxoyl(Rust Proofing) every Tyre was split along the inside wall. I had been driving around with my one year old son in the car,to say I got the dealers attention would be an understatement!.
Best of luck and let us know if youre joining the SEAT Stable..

The injectors should have been replaced under the silent recall, so ask about that as well. Also it should have had cambelt/water pump, brake fluid at that age. Also ensure it has a service every 12 months without fail. If any of these things have not been done you either negotiate or walk away.

Cash is not a big thing these days for dealerships, unless they need money in the bank. Certainly it's no incentive for a salesman, especially at that price. I reckon getting £250 off it would be well done, if it's solid.

Just an update, a mate of a mate who used to work at a Seat dealership says that I should be able to get around £300-500 off the asking price if I stick to my guns.

Really want that £500 off, would make things so much easier.

car sounds a goooden and I dont think the asking price is over the top but I bet you could get £500 off they will be happy with a quick turn around of the car...

And I think the car looks stunning in yellow :)

just done a which valuation on a SEAT leon FR TDI, september 2006 registered, 46000 miles, in yellow, with no extras at all. So the standard 17's, no satnav, bluetooth, usb port, etc etc.

They reckon the dealer retail price, in average condition, would be between £7925 and £8700.

Looks like they already priced it pretty well! So don't expect much off i guess!

Thanks very much ;)

Yeah, the main thing really is making sure these injectors have been changed and take a good look at when the cambelt was last changed!

Tbh I'm getting fed up of looking now; I wanted one in either yellow or white with decently low miles on it. Just want to get behind one now :(

Good luck with this. When I went to a seat dealer they would not budge on price even though I could have paid cash and was going to sell my car privately.

One thing they did offer to try and seal the deal was increase the warrenty to 3 years, treat the inside and outside with something (can't remember what) which cost £££ as well. So even if they dont reduce their offer, see if you can get extra onto the car which would save you over £500 over the coming years.

The extras they offered were good, but I had a budget and could not meet the price they wanted so walked away.

Then I went to a non dealer, got a better px and my current car was £1000 cheaper than the dealer.

A year on still going strong (but not modded  yet )

Well... I got told last Sunday It'd be coming in at £7995. Look today - £8495..

I'm still going to go and look at it, but there is no way i'm paying 8.5k for a 6 year old car. £8k was a push for me. Pretty annoyed tbh, its not like they put it up by £100, but £500 :/

Garages seem to do this especially when they think they have someone keen on the car.
The other reason maybe they have seen this thread!!!!!

Haha, maybe so!

Well I'm not paying that much, so they have lost someone who is keen on that car. You'd have to be a fool to pay £8.5k for a 6 year old car, especially when previously told it was going to be £8k.

There is in-fact one on autotrader for less price, less miles and newer. It was just convenient that it was close by and I wouldn't have to travel.

Ah well, sucks for them that they've lost someone who was very interested.

go in and tell them you were told it would be £7995, therefore you offer £7700, and thats that, tell them its cash, you pay today, done, sold. if they dont have it, walk away. There's more cars out there!

That's exactly what i'm going to do. I've even got the price written down when I went in to speak with them. Shame really, was looking forward seeing it, now i'm just going to see whats going on with the price...
