Hi all probably been asked before but can't find anything, aint got the time either. Basically the motor failed the mot today, rear passenger handbrake reading 0.0 NOTHING!! Told me it was the handbrake cable but of course it wasn't it's the leaver on the back of the caliper it's pretty much seized solid.
Would I need a wind back tool?
Any issues with removing the caliper?
Time? anyone come across this before?
Cheers all.

yes you can wind back the piston in the caliper fronts and backs the brake calipers are vw mk4 golf and before that mk2/3 golf audi 80 .

I think you can wind the piston in carefully with a screwdriver, the piston spins, so don't try and force the piston back with a caliper tool. Iirc :)

If the handbrake lever is seized it may not necessarily mean the piston is also seized.
You can try winding the piston back with the proper tool which cost around £15 or so but you'll still need work the lever free.
Plenty of Plus-gas on the mechanism can help here.

These calipers are very basic internally and extremely easy to strip down and refurbish.
On the flip side new ones don't cost much and is obviously the quicker and easier option if time is of the essence.

I had the same thing a few years back but they passed my car saying the other caliper worked enough to pass the NOT. it was the handbrake cable crushed on mine where someone had jacked the car and crushed the cable. I changed both calipers a couple of months back, cost about £125 for the calipers and a can of dot4, wish I had done it sooner as the braking difference is way better.

If it's the lever on the back of the caliper you can disconnect the handbrake cable, spray plenty of WD40 or Plus Gas and use pliers to work the lever back & forth.
It might be easier to remove the caliper and wind in the piston first.
I have a write-up on how to strip the caliper in my Readers Ride ;)

There are also springs you can buy to help prevent the handbrake sticking again. Helped for around 12 months but eventually had to replace the caliper
