Rear shock rubbers

If I want to change the rubber bump stop things and dust covers on the rear shocks do I have to remove the whole shock to do it. Or if I just jack the back of the car up and undo the top of the shock will it compress down enough to change them.

Could do it in situ but it'd be alot less of a **** ache if you removed it, just one more bolt.

Would be so much easier to take the strut off as access to undo the nut on the top is quite awkward otherwise
