Hi all, I'll be changing my rods soon and will obviously have the pistons out. If I do a compression test and find them all to be good beforehand will I need to replace the piston rings? Engine is on nearly 100,000 miles.

Ok, I ordered some rings from an Ebay seller. The rings for the AMK, BAM engine are listed in ETKA as 06A 198 151 A. What has just arrived from the seller is 06B 198 151 B which according to ETKA are for ARY, AUQ, AGN and APG engines.
Does anyone know if the 06B 198 151 B will be ok for my AMK?

Supplier said the 06A 198 151 A rings are chromium plated and are for the higher power engines. If you use the 06B 198 151 B on a AMK/BAM they'll cause the engine to start smoking eventually.
The correct rings are now on the way.

i would of put pistons in at that milage as you cant guarantee the ring gap in pistons until you get them out and then find they are worn car off road for a while getting pistons
You're the first one to suggest changing the pistons. Neither Bill, INA or IE recommended changing them while I was changing the con rods. I guess I'll have to see what the groove clearances come out at.
Can someone please advise on how to gap the oil control ring as it wasn't the style I was expecting. Also which way round do the other rings go? No doubt I'll find out when I remove the old rings but I'd rather know before going in.

Are they Goetze rings?
Look the same as mine that i used on my build.
For the bottom oil control ring gap the solid ring, the spring ring then sits inside of this, make the gap in the solid and gap in the spring 180 to one another.
the top ring should have TOP on it, you'l notice it has an almost chamfered edge to it which is the bottom side.
The middle ring is completely uniform so has no orientation, but i think there is some writting on it so in keeping with the other two i placed that facing up.

Looking through the piston ring sets, one of the sets has "top" labelled on both the compression rings. Doesn't help with which one to place in the top and middle grooves though.

ok I've been looking through the Goetze catalogue. The ring with the chamfered edge is a 'Single Hook Scraper' and the ring without any chamfers is labelled as a 'Plain Compression Ring'. It would appear that the chamfered ring is the middle ring.
The rings are an OE set and didn't come with instructions. No doubt it will all make sense when I take the first piston out.
Yeh sorry chamfered middle. As in your pictures. its also labelled on the packet the order, as well as the top and bottom ring clearence in the piston ring land.
