3-4hrs for the clutch, £50 for a clutch kit.
Clutch cable? £40, about 45 mins fitting time too.

suprisingly easy to DIY on a 1.4 though. easily done in a weekend with a haynes.

shame really, since I did it on my own with a basic toolkit.

but yeah - half a days labour, probably (sadly) cost more than the car is worth, but is worth doing :)

Is it really quite straight foward to do??? Because my clutch is on its way out but didnt think i'd be possible to DIY. I have changed my suspension myself, and same with the brakes and fluid and couple of other jobs. could you please point out to me some main/special tools that i'd defo need :D

Cheers

You'll need a 10mm spline drive (like torx but more splines) and a clutch alignment tool

But really - it's jack car up, remove starter motor, undo clutch cable & shift linkage. remove driveshafts, undo gearbox mount, undo front engine mount (remembering to support the engine) undo bell housing bolts & catch the gearbox.

about 8 small bolts hold the clutch in, clean it all up (that's why it's stiff) and refit.

hardest bit is refitting the gearbox as it has a funny centre of gravity.

Also - takes more oil than haynes suggests!

had the clutch done last year at 60 pounds labour, had the gearbox done recently for the same, but had to leave my new narked clutch on cos he wanted an extra 60 to swap that when i had the box done
(had to keep the car on ramps an extra day for it to come in, thus loosing buisness)

He said the clutch was buggered but its been ok since the box has been changed so as long as it stays put for when i sell it i should be ok :)

How heavy is the gearbox? Can one man lift it and also where do you put the support for the engine? Not under the sump obviously

awkward to lift, but just about do-able.

it's about 30kg dry I'd guess, but like I say - funny cog

you would be best lifting it on with a couple of mates, or having some wood maybe across the top of the engine bay which you can just hang the box from. it is a heavy thing to lift, and definitely not easy to manoevre into position and push on on your own. everything else tho should be alright...

Oh and i hear the drive shafts are a bitch to undo.
