Hi folks,

Need to do some paint renovation on my MK1 toledo, as it is very faded, was planning on buffing the car and using a cutting compound (used previously on another car) and wondered if anyone had any cheap tips or tricks to bring the paintwork back to life.

One issue i will have however, is on the front of the car (pics) the lacquer is coming off, so obviously i need to be careful not too buff this area, any ideas to repair the lacquer at home, or shall i get it done professionally?

Thanks

Sorry, site wont let me use any links to show you the pics of the car in its current state. I can put a link on twitter if you would like to see though (they are on imageshack)

You don't know by chance what it was called? Unfortunatly at the moment getting it done professionally is out of the question because of the costs involved, I have done a couple of resprays in the past, wheels etc, but not anything like this.

I assume that if I use my buffer, that would make the front end look a damn sight worse!?

if the lacquer is lifting there is only 1 way to sort it I am afraid, get the wet and dry out and rub it down, and repaint. Given a warm day (does anyone remember them?) you can do a ok job with Rattle cans. Use a 400 paper to get the old lacquer smoothed down, use a primer to seal the area, then leave to dry for a few days, use an 800 paper to flat the primer colour, leave for 30 minutes, then Lacquer. If you want to be really brave leave it for a month to dry hard and then use a 2000 paper to gently flat it then polish it up. As long as you put plenty of paint on buy using lots of light coats you will be ok.

3m is what I use when buffing cars. Wet and dry p2000. Just take your time and don't go over the edges too much.
