Rumble noise on turning sharp left ??

Hello,

Been having an issue with my Leon Cupra for a couple of months now. When i turn left (only left) i get a rumble noise (not really knocking), just like a muffled rumble from the right front side of the car (wheel well ?).

It's only noticable on turning sharp(ish) left. I can make gentle left turns without any problems, it's more when i'm turning sharply left over approx 10mph.

I did search through the posts and i saw people saying something about the ARB Brushes ??. Does it sound like this ?. If so, does anyone have a rough cost to replace ? (or CV joint ???? - although i was told that would be knocking quite loudly). Any ideas of a cost to fix ?

Best Regards,
Andy

hmmm, discs only went on a year ago, assuming it was the wheel bearing what sort of cost are we looking at there ? and is it safe to drive ? i'm supposed to be taking the kids to Flamingoland next week!. Car is in for it's 80k service in 2 or 3 weeks time.

Best Regards,
Andy

Excuse my cluelessness and dont laugh, i shouldn't really be let out!, what exactly am i wiggling up/down/left/right there ?, if you mean the wheel itself then i've done that and it seems quite normal to me, doesn't appear to be any abnormal play there ?

What would a wheel bearing cost to replace/fit by a seat stealer?

me and a friend replaced a wheel bearing on a ford focus, only cost us the bearing. we had to sweet talk a garage to use their compressor as we couldnt get the shagged bearing out, and used it to get the new one in.
easy to do, if you have the equipment
if your service is due soon, you could wait till then and ask them to diagnose, as long as you take it easy and dont bash the kerb you'll be fine. i drove a car with a shagged bearing for over a year and it was fine.

Thanks for that Volvic, as i say it's hardly noticable unless i do a sharp left and even then it's only a rumble. I think i'll get them to have a look at it and take one of their mechanics on a test drive just before the service which is due in under 1000 miles.

Cheers !

mmm that's worth checking actually, it could be that!, having said that those tyres have been on since August last year and i've only just noticed it within the last couple of months. I think the worst it can be is the bearings, in which case i don't think it should cost all that much if it's done as part of the service and mot, the seat dealer i take it to is pretty good for things like that. They were the ones that got my vaccuum pump ordered in and fitted for free even when the car was 2 years out of warranty!.

Hi again,

its not a service item and mot will only pick it up if there is excessive play. you cant really tell unless they take off the wheel and inspect the hub, or even open the hub(if its at an early stage).

if a mech takes it for a spin, or you take him they should be able to tell you.

Im the same, only i get it both sides, after doing the usual searches etc etc i put mine down to tyre noise.

This can be caused by under or over inflation of a tyre at some point in its lifespan causing it to "feather" this "feathering" will cause a "rumble"!!

Feathering is basically where the tyre to the touch is rough on rotation.

Hi Jimski, thanks for that, so is your noise all the time or only on turning ? I get tyre whirr on driving straight (but i put that down to the wide tyres contacting the road). However, it's more of a rumble on turning left (and only left), not loud, but noticable!

Andy

Cheers Jimski, seems as if it's quite a common thing then. Not going to rush to get it sorted as i don't think it's anything to worry about just yet. It's going in for a service in 1,000 miles so i'll get it looked at then. Just started a weeks holiday so gonna need the car, don't really want it off the road when it can wait a few weeks. I'll just have to take it gentle, especially on those left turns !! :)

Andy

Hi, just a bit of an update on this noise/rumble coming from the front right on turning left.

The car went in for its 80k service yesterday (80k service, cam belt, water pump, NS CV Boot and Rear Offside Suspension Spring (coil), Brake Fluid etc)

I thought the noise might have been linked to the rear offside suspensions spring (apparently broken!), but on getting the car back today the noise is still there, so i'm just asking for any more ideas as to what it might be ??

I told the mechanic about the noise and he took it out on a test run, he heard the noise and checked it out but couldn't find anything obvious looking underneath the car. He said it wasn't the wheel-bearings, and he put it down to the tyres, in particular the ones i had on (arrowhead pattern, if you know what i mean, similar to this http://wheelstudio.com/catalog/images/nexen/n3000_sm.jpg)

He said that it seems to be doing it below 30mph and only when turning left (steering lock quarter turn or more). He did mention that the tyres could cause this "rumble", but i still don't think it's tyre related !. The type of noise isn't a rubber kind of noise. It's more like a warble (not constant) and seems to warble faster when the wheels are going faster (pardon my crap description there!). It sounds like a hollow cardboardy gentle knocking/grinding !, but only on left sharper turns. Turning left to cross lanes is fine.

Does anyone else have a clue what this could be ?. It seems as if it's coming from the front (but i could be wrong on that), but definitely on the right hand side.

Short of actually recording the noise, i cannot think of a way to describe it !.

Hoping someone can help !

Best Regards,
Andrew

Same as mine dude, and yep mine is tyres :p haha, sorry dude, but i really think it is tyres, especially the outer edge, which will be in contact when doing the sharp turns.

I really wouldnt worry dude.

It seems a bit strange that you have this noise and a split CV bush but the garage didn't think about changing that CV joint
Perhaps not the best garage in the world
