Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but at least there's no argument ST is for... well, older people But I guess people buy estates for practicality and not for beauty contests. Being settled and waiting for my first baby, I am also reconsidering if I need a beautiful car at all, I don't need to impress anybody now So, why not a 5-door or a ST, if that's best for the family. To hell with beautiful and unpractical cars! Can't believe I'm saying that!

I've always liked Estate cars ( we call 'em station wagons in Australia), starting with my first car, a 1981 Datsun Bluebird. Love RS6's Estate's though, they look ace.

With age, comes experience......and let's face it, you are no more likely to impress birds with your slightly less practical and warm version of a mainstream family hatchback than I am in my slightly more practical and hot version of a mainstream family hatchback.

You are about to embark on a change of lifestyle that you won't appreciate until you are in it. You honestly won't give a tuppenny (old fashioned term ) shite whether you look cool and might still be able to drag Sally Shuffleknuckle from on the tills at the local Tesco just cos you drive an SC Leon. She'll be too busy laughing at the puke on your T-shirt and the matchsticks in your peepers

I agree estates in some cars look good. The st is one of those. Mondeo titanium x sport estates look good, don't laugh but I noticed a 308 estate this morning that had a bit of a kit on and looked good. I'll get my coat and leave for that comment lol

I've literally moved the whole IKEA with my SC so I doubt it a bunch of diaper packs would require an estate

BTW, SC's boot is 380l - same as the 5-door, the Golf and actually more than many other cars in that class that appear bigger but have boots at about 350l. And I've even traveled with tall guys in the back seats on a few long journeys. Yeah, they don't feel like being in an S-class but their heads are not touching the roof, there is a knee room for them, etc. It's only the getting in/out that's uncomfortable. I'm not advocating for a 3-door If I am buying now it would be a 5-door but 3-doors are perfectly capable cars.

That's a fair point actually. But then you're trading visibility for practicality, unless you don't need to give people lifts anywhere. Also, occassionally I need to carry stuff and just being able to chuck shopping bags or heavy items in the back seat is a big plus.

Worth bearing in mind the 3 door is slightly shorter in the wheelbase compared to the other two which is obviously all lost on the rear legroom (boot is identical to the 5 door). I used to have an SC and the back seats definitely felt cramped, especially as I am on the taller side.

I actually think all three versions are equally handsome. SEAT did a great job making desirable cars across the range. The main difference is between the models within the range, with the FR and Cupra being the nicest by some margin.

I thought about getting the ST and I don't even have kids. However, once I saw the size of the boot on the 5 door, I thought it was fine. I've been using it for awhile now and I've never struggled fitting anything into the boot. I've had a 3 door ibiza before this and while I like the look of small 3 doors, it was a massive pain day to day.

I'd say the 5 door is the best and the estate if you want to help your mates move house all the time!

EDIT - I work with a guy who has a 3 door Golf and regrets not buying the 5 door, simply due to the size of the doors and it's apparently quite awkward when getting out of tight spots.

I own an SC, If you want to put people in the back then its not really the car you need. im 6.3 and it has to be a very small person to sit behind me.....

As other people have said, it's such a personal choice which version they prefer. It's like the one which appears occasionally 'Which is the best colour?'

I definitely don't subscribe to the idea that STs are for Grandads/Grandmas and 5 doors are for Dads, while only SCs are cool.

I have a red 5 door and close to me today in a car park was a red SC. It was a perfectly nice looking car, but no better than mine, in fact I think I prefer the 5 door.

My son has a red Audi A3 sport wagon and again I think it looks much better than the 3 door version.

I have a baby and the 5 door is absolutely fine for me. I needed 5 doors to be able to get his baby seats in and out but I wouldn't say I needed the St. It would obviously have more room but I manage to fit everything in that I need in my 5 door for now.

Also, nobody can gawk at you at the lights because the B pillar is in the way on the 5-door. I hated that about my 3-door Polo. Visibility not an issue whatsoever with the B pillar for me.

I'm fairly tall at almost 6 feet and I have my seat quite far back and like JACUPRA280 I have no problem with visibility due to the B pillar on my 5 door.

I'll admit I got hooked on estates a long, long time ago. My first was an "emergency" buy Astra Mk1 estate when my car broke. Really liked the practicality of it. I played a lot of sport in those days (in my late 20s) and on the driver rotation, having a small estate to lug 3-4 blokes plus their sports gear around was spot on. From that I went to a slightly larger and sportier Mk2 Astra estate. Loved that one, too. Had estates ever since. When you need the practicality of them you'll be glad you've got one.

The ST isn't a load lugger of an estate in the image of old Volvos etc. It's not that much bigger than the 5dr. Not much weight difference either. As a small-ish estate I prefer it to the 5dr. I think it looks pretty good too, in much the same way some Alpha sportwagons look better than their saloon/hatch e.g.156.

Performance and handling - there's little to choose between the 5dr and the ST.

STs aren't that common, so it's something different in the car park/driveway if that appeals.

Grandad image? errrr, no (they drive Fords, Hyundais & Kias).

I got the ST because I like the looks of it and wanted one as soon as it was announced. The extra boot space is nice as I carry a fair amount of kit around for work but I could easily manage with the 5 door. Since getting it I do kind of fancy a 5 door again but that could just be me wanting to have something different. Reckon I would want the ST again if I got the 5 door. The 3 door never appealed to me. I don't like the looks.
