Sealed Sump Plug Problem

Hi

Got a bit of a dilemma. I took my car to a local garage for a 40K service last weekend. They phoned me up later on saying that just as they were about to change the oil they noticed that the sump plug was covered in a thick layer of silicone sealant. They said that the only reason they could think for that being there would be that the garage that did the previous service had stripped the thread on the sump when they replaced the sump plug. Or is it a possibility that they covered the plug in order to give it some protection against the elements?

If there is a problem with the sump then do you think I have any recourse for going back to the previous garage and getting them to check it out and possibly replacing the sump? I mean, I don't like the idea of having to fork out nearly £150 for a new one if there is an issue. The car was under warranty when the last service happened but has now lapsed.

if the service guy has not yet touched it I would cerainly take it back and ask otherwise they will blame the second garage, if damaged it's a helicoil job you don't want to drain it twice!! or there is someone who does oversized sump plugs best of luck

Need a new sump

Thanks for the advice. My wife took the car back to the garage where I had the original service done and they put the car up on a ramp. According to my wife, the sealant which is "supposedly" over a year old is remarkably clean. I would have thought it would be somewhat dirty and perished after being there for over a year.

Anyway, looks as though I am going to have to fork out for a new sump. If anyone knows where I can get a new one cheap I would be very grateful. Also, does anyone know of any garage's in the Glasgow area specialising in German cars? SEAT services are horrendously expensive and so I would prefer taking it to someone I can trust and not cost me the world.

Thanks for the advice. Think I am just going to go and fork out for a new sump. Going to buy the sump, the oil and oil filter myself and then take it somewhere to get fitted. How much oil does the car need? Would a 5litre can do?

Any recommendations on oil filter either?

to save a potential future mod, you good go to merlin motorsprt and get the sump plug with temp sender built in should you ever think about an oil temp gauge

my last service at seat said it used 4.5ltr so i think 5ltr should be enough, but those more knowledgeable will shout
also, MAKE SURE you get correct oil for engine
