Hello there. Basically I have a seat Ibiza 1.2 2005 and she keeps going into limp mode. Iv replaced the ignition coils and spark plugs but still no luck, she drives fine but when idling after 20 minutes of driving she goes into limp mode. Please help I bought the car yesterday. Has anyone else had this problem? She drives fine when I first start her just when she idles she can't keep the revs and it shakes like hell. Is it normal for a 3 cylinder to shake so bad?

I take it that at the moment there is no engine management light on permanently? This happened to mine and unfortunately it is a well documented problem. The timing chain tensioner back up spring fails which allows the chain to jump at start up. Gradually it valve timing gets far enough out to trip the management light and it won't start at all.

If you get the fault codes read, you get errors relating to crankshaft and camshaft position sensor failures. Quick check - take the spark plug out of no.1 cylinder (LH as you look backwards from in front) bring the piston up to top dead centre and then at the RH end take the two inspection caps off the end of the camshafts. Under there are two slots, they should be pointing directly in a straight line.

All is not lost, if they don't line up. This engine tolerates the valve timing being wrong quite well, there are numerous reports of getting the cam chain replaced and engine retimed without any further issue, mine included.

Hi thanks for the responses Today the light went off finally, but when she idles she is still really rough, i keep the accelerator pedal at 2000 revs when at red lights so she dosent go into limp mode (that's when she last did it when idling) so she won't go into limp mode again. And I would send it back to seller lol if it wasn't private but I'm having a great time with the car when she actually works! So if it is the timing chain slipping what parts do I have to buy? Also I had her checked on a obd scanner and no errors or faults are coming up even if the light is on?

Thanks everyone who replys!

Hmmm, might just be a misfire. VCDS will be able to read the stored code for "misfire no.1" etc.
Not sure if an OBD reader would be able to.

I changed a coil pack to cure mine about 5 years ago . Moved the reported culprit to a different cylinder, cleared faults and drove it a bit then checked faults again to see if the misfire had moved - it had, so I knew it wasn't a sparkplug. £22 from euro carparts in stock.

As for a cam chain tensioner, it's a sump off, end cover off, and a special tool to lock the shaft timing. I believe the spares are £100 or so including a new engine mount that SEAT insist on replacing as it is easier than trying to dismantle it.

Obviously the first move is to let the seller know so that they can share your discomfort and really by trading "rules" need to help you out.

I can see that maybe you have bought a car at a good price and apart from this you like the car, so that makes things a bit awkward - so, get that car seen to quickly before it does itself some damage.

Also using just a generic OBD2 scan tool is not much good as they tend to only cover/decode emissions related codes. What you need is a better scan tool in this case one that covers VAG products would find and correctly decode some codes.
