I take it that at the moment there is no engine management light on permanently? This happened to mine and unfortunately it is a well documented
problem. The timing chain tensioner back up spring fails which allows the chain to jump at start up. Gradually it valve timing gets far enough out to trip the management light and it won't start at all.
If you get the fault codes read, you get errors relating to crankshaft and camshaft position sensor failures. Quick check - take the spark plug out of no.1 cylinder (LH as you look backwards from in front) bring the piston up to top dead centre and then at the RH end take the two inspection caps off the end of the camshafts. Under there are two slots, they should be pointing directly in a straight line.
All is not lost, if they don't line up. This engine tolerates the valve timing being wrong quite well, there are numerous reports of getting the cam chain replaced and engine retimed without any further issue, mine included.
