Hi all,

I am new to this forum and seeking some advice.

I have recently purchased a seat leon 1.2 tsi (61 reg), when i bought it the car was fine for a few days then it developed a rattling sound. On a cold start the car would make a loud rattle noise for about 5 seconds then go away, there was still a rattle noise after 5 seconds but not as loud, as soon as the engine warmed up the noise would go away. I took the car to a garage who said that the timing chain tensioner needed replacing, i have replaced the tensioner with a new one.

I have tested the car out and i still get the loud rattle which now lasts for about 2 seconds then the low rattle noise until engine warms up. On some occassions on a cold start there is no rattle noise at all, seems the tensioner has made things a little better.

I have been told with the 1.2 tsi engine the rattle noise is common and there is nothing to worry about, i have also been told the timing chain does start to loosen after 80k mileage and when the car parked on a hill the chain will struggle lubricate with oil hence make the noice on start up.

I thought i would come on here and seek some advice from anyone who has had a similar issue, a little concerned as the garage who i bought the car from replaced the tensioner so i am not entirely convinced am i being told the whole truth.

Any help will be appreciated

Sounds like a chain to me. Mine needed changing at 28k with same symptoms. Some of the chains were not strong enough and stretch. Get it sorted before it stretches enough to cause damage to the engine. While you are in there get the guide pads changed also.
