You’re not the only one - one of the VW forums I’m a member on which has a predominantly US membership, they didn’t know either until I mentioned it. Every day’s a school day .

The UK gallon is also known as the imperial gallon - as opposed to the US gallon - and historically was used by Commonwealth countries, although many Commonweath countries no longer use it.
