Angle grinder... New droplink lol. Happens all the time, they were the same on my old pug 306 and I had to use the angle grinder more than once!

i would leave the car to settle for a few thousand miles before doing alignment

Why? To have a reason to buy new shoes to the Leon?:S

I think a few thousand is overkill. The spring should settle a lot sooner than that depending on the driving you do. Most people seem to do about 100miles and then go and get the alignment done.
