Hi all, just bought this car, I’m no mechanic, but I’ve done a bit of research, and have a tapping noise which is coming from the top end, I’ve taken it to a garage and said I suspect it’s the chain making the noise, but the garage have told me it has a timing belt and no chain?

I think earlier cars 2.0tfsi are belt and later 2.0tsi ( 2010 /11) are chain but im sure someone will confim but post what year

Hi it’s got a cambelt drivers side and a chain to link the cams together the other side. It’ll kill two birds with one stone when you get the chain done it’s best to do the cam belt and tensioner too. It’s just expensive if a garage doesn’t it I’d expect around £1000-1200 Inc vat but if possible I’d take it to a vag specialist who’s familiar with this engine.

Thanks for the reply and info, it’s booked in this Saturday for the cam belt, water pump and oil change, so I’ll give the garage a call and ask them about a price for the chain tomorrow - the car has only done 54k with one owner from new, so would you expect the chain to come loose at this kind of mileage?

The chances are the plastic guide has become brittle and snapped off and that’s the tapping your hearing. Millage doesn’t really matter if the parts are 15years old.
Sounds like you’ve got a good one low millage and 1 owner sounds like a keeper. Have you got any photos of it?

Thanks mate, is that a serious issue then? I thought the same with the timing belt, no proof of it being done but if it’s 15 years old then chances are it’s degraded..
To be fair it’s in really good condition and although it’s down in the years it’s really clean and seems to have been well looked after. It’s completely standard at the moment, I’ve not got any good pics but I’ll take some tomorrow if I’m home before it’s dark tomorrow and put some up.

There’s my car, completely standard for now.

If it's tfsi and I've got a cupra 2010, it is s belt. I too thought it was a chain until i had to change it
