I've got a Mk3 2.0tdi 184 which randomly takes a good few seconds to start. Sometimes it fires up straight away and sometimes it doesn't. The battery is in good order and I doubt it would be the glow plugs due to the warm weather. I'm going to change the diesel filter as i'm unsure when that was last done but doubt that will make too much difference. No fault codes stored on the OBD port. When driving it's perfect with no power loss or anything.

I'm sure I've seen this mentioned a few times in other posts, have a search. You've really not posted in the correct section. :(

Search for Long crank.

It's quite common, mine randomly does this. Typically, when my diesel hating son is around to take the piss.

From what ive read the engine is looking for the correct oil pressure to fire up.

I live with it as many have tried to sort it and failed. What i do is when you sense it will be a long crank turn off and go again and it fires straight up.

My 184 would randomly long crank, more so in cold weather. Glow plugs and glow plug relay got changed and it still did it (they still needed changing). I then had a random flat battery and then it wouldn't start. The battery was about 6 months old. Ended up with another new battery, starter motor and new battery earth lead.

I have no idea why but since then I've never had a long crank and that was 18 months ago. Very weird. Some people say if you have VVT it could be that but my CUPA Euro5 doesn't have it. A lot of people just live with it being a bit quirky.
