hi all, just had a tow back with the cupra tdi as it has developed as serious knocking noise from idle to any revs. i was driving down the dual carriageway at 80 mph and was over taking a car when the car jolted then plumes of white smoke came out the exhaust, so i slowed down to go round the round about and in to tesco carpark when i noticed the horrid knocking noise, it sounded like a bag of spanners were rattling in the engine. as the revs got higher the noise got louder. sat at idle there was no white smoke, only when under load while driving. every now and again it goes into limp mode caused by over boosting, still cant find the problem for this one, but turn the car off and on again and its fine. a mechanic i know said it could be an injector fooked which is causing the excessive white smoke and knocking, or something more serious internally. have you guys ever had this one to deal with or now what could be wrong. cheers sly.

found out tonight that the problem with the car is not injectors, its 2 tappets that have broken into pieces and knackered 2 valves. the tappets are in little pieces in the top of the head. really not happy now. only had the car for 5 months and already throwing money at it left right and centre. has anyone else had this happen to them. will get some pictures up when i strip it down for you all to see.

I just had to get a new camshaft and tappets in mine. Budget for a new timing belt, as well as new valves in your case. You may find that once you get the rocker cover off the cam is on its way out too. Not an uncommon issue on these engines unfortunately. Seem say it's due to using the wrong oil at service time. Seem say it's down to dodgy cams. Nothing proven though. Won't be a cheap bill mate - I paid 850 for cam, tappets, timing belt etc.

i have possibly got another complete head coming so all i need is head gasket and cambelt kit. also need to get some timing tools. got all the info i need on a seat service cd.

started stripping the engine down tonight, got the boost pipes, egr valve, and fuel water vacuum hoses off, tomorrow the fun really starts, got the exhaust pipe turbo and manifolds to take off and then pretty much just the head. got most parts ordered but is there anything in particular that i should take off and clean or replace while going to this much trouble, please let me know, will be much appreciated. cheers sly.

Yep, mine happened after 120000 miles where the cam wore a hole through the tappet. The car had the correct oils every service as well. Shell helix till 55000 when I got the car and then fuchs from then onwards with oil change and filter change every 10000 miles, so either there is an issue with the cams and tappets or the oil.

Personally I think that the 5w 40 505.01 oil is not quite good enough for the engine and have started using castrol edge 507.00 5w 30 oil as this is supposed to exceed the 505.01 specs.

hi peeps, took the head off at the weekend and took it to a a head specialist near me and got a phone call today to say that he has found the cause of the problem, he said that the cam lobes have worn so low on 2 that it has allowed the lifters to come out the pocket to rattle about and cause the damage that it has, but when i asked what had caused it said most likely the type of oil i have used.

i serviced the car when i first bought it 5 months ago all filters and engine oil. the oil i used was what halfords recommend which was 10w 40 part synthetic diesel oil, is this the right oil i should be using for the car or do you suggest something else? the car is a cupra tdi 04.

one more post and i can put pics up for all to see.

here are some pics of the damage
