Hi
I am wondering if anyone can tell me what the service intervals are for the new 1.4 tsi
are they fixed yearly or every two years as I am aware the mileage interval is 19000,
As I have a friend with the Eco motive 1.2 and am aware they are on long life service of every two years unsure if this is the case for the 1.4tsi petrol

Mines on the yearly. Every year or 10,000 miles. You can have long life but it's set by the dealer when you buy the car.

I'd avoid long life if you're planning on keeping the car. I don't care what anyone says, waiting 2 years/20,000 miles for a service won't be good for your engine or car. It's there as a marketing ploy to make running costs look cheaper for people who don't care for cars and just want a car cheap and care free.

Almost certainly you have the choice.

The car will probably be set up so that it is on long-life service which can be as much as 2 years or about 18000 miles. The service indicator will tell you when a service is due - it depends on driving style and conditions of use.

As an alternative you can have the service indicator changed so that a service is due every 12 months or about 9000 miles whichever is sooner.

My 1.2 TSi is on long-life and because I don't do many miles and the car has an easy time it turns out to be every 2 years.

It could be argued that short miles degrades the oil quicker than longer journeys, either way for me 10k on oil is plenty and my engine I'd never let exceed this..

Don't confuse low overall miles with short journeys! I use feet and a bicycle for those! What's more I've just returned from a 340 mile each way trip up the motorway.

The car measures oil temperature and also (effectively) miles per gallon. If the oil gets hot it degrades so this is a factor. If the mpg is low it indicates a pattern of use that will likely degrade oil and increase engine wear. In fact the service indicator could come on *before* 10,000 miles are done and before one year is up if conditions are bad.

All this is explained in VAG SSP224 (service interval extension) - well worth a read.

True your right I did conclude in my mind 1 miles trips. Oil does degrade when very hot yes, but generally if kept at its desired temp, ie motorway us, its longevity is excellent..

If you are only keeping the car for 2-4 years go with the long life oil and save yourself some money especially if SEAT say its okay to do so, keeping warrenty etc, if not do it every 10,000 with quality oil and keep an eye on your oil level as these TSI's like to smoke.

Its a machine... the better you take care of it the better it works for you. Yearly servicing and keeping a regular eye on the fluids and wear and tear of the consumables such as brakes, wipers and tyres means you'll never end up like 'one of those' people ;-)

Fully synth oil doesn't actually degrade it just carries more dirt in it. I still change mine with filter at 10k though.
Brakes are the main issue for me in 2yr servicing. From new the pads aren't well greased in the calipers and tend to stick. Over 2 winters this can result in rusty discs needing replacement even before the first MOT.

Read it in a motorcycle mag years ago. Sure if you Google full synthetic oil properties you'll find something.
This one for instance

Thanks, but doesn't indicate that it doesn't degrade.

7500 for oil, 10k for plugs

I once covered 100k on plugs..:D

The longevity issue seems to be the amount of soot and other contaminants carried. I believe some trucks, Merc in particular offer very long service intervals with good oil filtration.

I've got an ACT with 900 miles on it almost. Thinking of getting it changed (or changing it myself depending on warranty) at 1k or maybe 2k. Call my old fashioned but I think I'd feel better that it's changed after this period. I know they are 'worn in' when you buy them but I don't have total faith in any companies statements like that! Opinions welcome chaps?

I'm planning on doing the same at 1,000 miles. ACT also.

Can't hurt can it.

Any idea on the oil amount and type?

Exactly! I imagine it's probably about average for a 1.4 probs 3.something litres or so and I'm guessing it's something like 10-W30 for short life but I need to refer to manual! You got it in the Ibiza (140) or Leon (150)?
