I want to service my own V5 but have a few questions about it. First of all it's the 150bhp 10 valve version (with the leads on the engine cover). These might sound like silly questions but i want to make sure i have absolutely everything i need before i start to service the car. I am used to servicing my old 306 Dturbo which was so simple!

What tools do i need to remove the oil filter and what size? I understand the oil filter is an element on this car rather than a cartridge type as used on some other cars.
Where is the fuel filter and what's the best way to change it?
Also, where is the sump plug and what tools do i need to remove it, as in does it need a special key or will a spanner/socket fit over the edge of the plug?

If anyone has any tips to help make the job a bit easier then please feel free to add them here?

Fuel Filter is in front of the offside front wheel underfloor-obviously. I found the clips are a nightmare to get off in one peice. Have some jubilee clips at the ready! Don't forget to open your filler pipe when you take it off! ;)

The oil filter and sump plug can be accessed by removing the undertray that attaches to the front bumper. They are easy to see when that is off. From memory the socket you need to undo the oil filer is a 38mm (its in my tool box, i'll have a look later), if you use the plastic nut feature to undo it. There is not a huge amount of room to get anything else in there.

If you are doing spark plugs, you'll need one of those jointed extension peices as the plugs are along way down past the inlet manifold. Not sure of the exact size for the socket, but it is the smaller of the 2 you get in a standard socket set... if that helps.

Air filter is pretty straight forward. The pollen filter is under the plenum cover at the base of the screen on the nearside, take off the rubbery water guide and the filter is underneath it just clips out. Just make sure that the pollen filter is seated securely when yuo re-fit it or you'll end up with a puddle in you passenger footwell! ;-)

Anything else you are chaging for this service?

Thanks Stu.
I already know where the pollen filter is as i had to replace my whole wiper motor/mechanism last month, not a nice job to do. :( I've also re-sealed all the doors and used a VAX to suck up loads of water.

I was planning to just do the Oil, Oil Filter, Air Filter, and Pollen filter for now. How often does the fuel filter need to be changed? The car is on around 84k right now.

No worries

Not sure on the fuel filter interval tbh. I changed mine as my car was running lumpy. Turned out to be the dreaded MAF sensor! lol

could just be that the service light need resetting.

Could be, but i'd rather be safe than sorry. :) My last car shot a conrod and cost me £700 to fix, so i don't want to take any risks with this one. The dealer i got the car off said they hadn't serviced it and it started saying it needs a service about a week after i bought it. I've had the car for 2 months now so i might just go for a basic oil and filter change as the air filter looks ok.

what service history have you got with the car?

A stamped handbook with previous services upto about 60k, and then the odd receipt since then for things like rear springs, thermostat, etc.

The car is now upto about 83k so just overdue a service as the last one was carried out at about 73k.

It was a cheap Toledo compared to others i've seen for sale which have much higher mileage and in worse condition so i can't complain really. Just going to get the bits i need and attempt to do the service on monday if it's not chucking it down.
