Small Fuel Tank !

My wife and myself have noticed the fuel tank level on our Mk6 1.0 Ibiza Tsi goes down quickly but doesn't take much fuel (or money) to fill up even though we only do fairly local driving at the moment. The tank capacity is quoted as 40 litres which is a bit smaller than the competition like the Fiesta and Micra. The previous Mk5 Ibiza had a 45 litre tank which definately didn't need filling up as often. My MK3 Leon has a 55 litre fuel tank which is just fine.

So SEAT why such a small fuel tank ?

I’ve noticed this too. I still get ~400 miles from it though.

It’s cheaper to manufacture, less weight, more efficient technically. I do wish there was an option for a bigger tank though.

400 miles 🤔
Mine will do just under 300. 100 motorway. Rest local to shops. Maybe once engine has run in will increase as only 231miles on it so far. But my 2015 Ibiza FR DSG did 300-320 miles locally once the engine had been broken in.

I only drive 8 miles to work, park up with engine running for 20 mins then drive 8 miles home later on - i average 46mpg on the journey and just filled up after 320 miles with 1/4 tank still left.
The Fiesta 1.0 i traded in would do 300 to a tank

My current model VW Polo also has the same sized small (40 litre) fuel tank. The tank in my previous generation Polo was larger - 45 litres.

Even with the smaller tank, I‘m not filling up very often. Under the current lockdown, a tankful of petrol lasts me a long time when the only use my car’s getting is one ‘essential’ 12-14 mile round trip a week to the supermarket! 🙂

All my car's live on Shell Vpower. Might change to the Esso synergy fuel. Might make a difference. Or could be just my driving style. Drive it like you stole it.

Nobody come and shoot me down, but I always get worse fuel economy with Shell premium fuel so I switched to Tesco years ago.

This week my commute has been 38 miles each way and I’ve used two different fuels. Note, readings are from the display.

On Tesco Momentum (my usual tipple) I was averaging 51/52mpg there and back which is typical for what I normally get.

I couldn’t be bothered going to Tesco’s the other day so I filled up with Texaco Supreme down the road from me. Next day to work and back I realised I was getting more like 58/59mpg.

Similar temps, 90% of journey is sat in cruise at either 70mph or 50mph in speed limited areas.

@Mike Coulter; I won’t shoot you down! 🙂

Standard unleaded v’s premium unleaded and supermarket v’s branded fuel and the relative merits of each are car-related subjects that are often discussed on forums - same with DSG v’s manual transmission, leather v’s cloth upholstery, petrol/diesel v’s electric, dealer servicing v’s independent servicing. There’ll no doubt be other subjects too that can divide opinion.

It can be quite difficult to do accurate comparative mpg tests between different fuel brands as there are many factors that’ll affect mpg. As you’re driving a reasonable distance using the same route under very similar conditions with the main - if not the only - difference being the type / brand of fuel used, then that should give a pretty good indication of whether one fuel is better than another in terms of mpg achieved. However, price shouldn’t be ignored, and premium branded fuels will usually cost more that supermarket fuel, so any additional cost per litre v’s improvement in mpg needs to be factored in.

I pretty much always use supermarket fuel because it’s convenient for me to fill up when doing a supermarket run, and apart from a mega expensive filling station selling Gulf fuel in a village near me, there are virtually no filling stations on the routes I regularly drive. I also don’t bother too much about mpg, as I drive relatively few miles these days (even fewer during lockdown!) and fuel economy wasn’t one of the main considerations for me when I bought my car.

I'm getting similar range to my old Fabia, which had a 45 litre tank. Filled up earlier today and it was saying 415 miles. I've got 500 out of a tank once, when I had to collect my other half from Heathrow just at the beginning of the first lockdown so drove down, collected him, and drove straight back to Manchester. That was all 70 mph on the ACC.

I'm very impressed with the fuel consumption. Got 53.5 mpg driving home from work today (indicated). 25 miles, mix of rural and motorway, tiny bit of town running up to my house. ACC 70mph on the motorway, but driving normally.

When I had my MK5 Ibiza FL 1.0 EcoTSI, full tank usually last 400+ miles. HIghways only, maybe closer to 450+ miles from full tank to red light. Bear in mind this tank was 45 litres. Found that Shell Vpower gave the best mpg according to the car. Eg...said journey I do every weekend Sunday AM no traffic, gets me 49-51mpg. Done this journey every weekend for 2 years. The one time I did it with Vpower, it showed 58mpg, perhaps just almost breakevens compared to 95RON cheaper fuel. Esso 97 gave me smoothest engine. All other 95RON Shell/Esso/BP/Texaco/Jet I couldn't tell any differences whatsoever. Tesco Momentum 99 gave me nothing special. Never tried BP Ultimate or Texaco Supreme 97.

The funny thing was my next car was a Volvo V40, and that had a 62 litre tank...so my usual £25 fill ups, hardly moved the fuel bars, but on the Ibiza it would do at least half.

Filled up with Esso Supreme+ in my Alpina. Might be in my head but the car was rapid. Ibiza will be filled next few days and see how that reacts. Been using Vpower since 2006/7 i think. The rewards system is rubbish now. Addicted to Nectar points so Esso might be the fuel choice going forward.

My old S3 was noticeably smoother and nicer to drive on Esso Supreme fuel.
