Smokin! 1.4 sport

Hi all,
Recently bought an arosa 1.4 sport for a runabout. only problem is it smokes!
i originally thought it was mostly blueish smoke when i revved it at the upper end of the rev range. 4k upwards.
first thing i did when i got it was change the oil and filter. still smoked.
after driving it for a while , its more of a black colour. and it will build up and throw it out , then nothing for a bit , then another big cloud when throttling on again. not all the time but enough. it is using oil.
IF ANYTHING , ITS GOT WORSE SINCE I TRIED A WYNNES NO SMOKE TREATMENT.
just wanted peoples opinions on this and figured id get more joy in this forum than the arosa section.
the car drives fine and i can live with the smoke would just like to hear opinions on it.

Does it tend to build up when you are using the engine to brake i.e. downhill?

Mine does this, it'll be fine for ages, but as soon as I throttle on after going downhill it puts out a big grey/blue cloud. Uses a little oil, apparently it's due to the vacuum you get when engine braking pulling oil into the cylinders which is then burnt off when you throttle up again.

Of course if yours does this on and off all the time, it may be something different.

It's basically stuff wearing out - I'm afraid I work on the principal that if it's only doing it every so often, and not using masses of oil, it can be left alone for now, so no suggestions on fixes!

sounds like mine i wouldnt worry.. mines slightly worse as i have a lazy lifter lol.... but mine will push blue smoke for the first 10 second on start up quickly followed by black. on over run it does puff after giving it beans. all characteristics of the 1.4 lol :). you need to worry when its passing blue smoke constantly and you get an oily smell from your heaters and coolent resevoir ;)

sounds like valve stem seals to me, had the same problem on my old mini (massive problem with a new engine :S) mine used to leave a cloud of smoke at traffic lights. cars would disappear behind me

Replacing the valve stem seals a difficult job ?
or expensive for if done by a garage ?

Its not a difficult job in its self (remove valve springs and pull off valve stem seal) But you need to remove the head from the engine to remove the valve springs which makes it quite time consuming!

I must say my sport kicks out hardly any smoke at all and its 10 year old?
I would NOT recommend you using any addetives such as redex etc, these contain nasty chemicals which cant do your system anygood.
