So, I've lost 6th gear........

On the way to mot this morning, went for 6th and nothing there, motor just revs.
All other gears are there and still working fine, have had he '3rd gear whine' for a while so was waiting for something gearbox related to go, just not in the way it has. Anyone else had this?
Car is back home and won't be going any further, starting to shop around for a gearbox rebuild.
Will be changing clutch and flywheel while it's out, is it worth looking at solid flywheel conversion (G60 golf I'm told) or is that only for silly power (it's stock at the minute but probably look at a remap in the future) or just go for the LUK flywheel, clutch and cylinder set up that's readily available.
Thanks in advance
Mark

Should probably have mentioned its a 53 plate Cupra with the AUQ 180bhp motor:rolleyes:

Anyone?
Got the chance of a low mileage Cupra R box, ERR code, still ok to fit in my car?

AUQ Cupras had ERR boxes from 2001-05, so it should fit.

I thought tit was the case, just wanted to make sure before I went ahead with it.
Probably will look to have my old box repaired as a back up, someone ive spoken to today has heard of Golf boxes sometimes dropping a gear due to plastic retainers failing? Hopefully this is the case.
Cheers

Unusual to see a dropped 6th gear in the 02M, the usual weak spot is 3rd for stripping the teeth under big torque, or breaking the 3/4 shift fork rivets.

As muttley said you've got no problem using the Cupra R box :)

Are we sure it's 6th that's actually broken? As said above that's not a weak point normally!
Have you done the linkage reset? Worth a try before spending hundreds out!

As the box (conveniently) first developed the fault on the way to my mates garage for mot we spent a good hour going through linkages etc after its test. All looked ok.
As the box is already whining in 2nd, 3rd and 4th I'm taking the opportunity to get it sorted and do the clutch/flywheel while we're at it. It's all still original with nearly 130k and had been toying with getting it remapped but not with the box being as noisy as it is as I think it would finish it off.
Only down side is I was supposed to be at VW action and Edition 38 this weekend in the Leon so it's a weekend at home instead:(

Update...

Should really update this, although the old box had its postmortem a couple of months ago.....
On the journey up to my mates place all gears were fine with only 6th missing, as it was all motorway stuff I tried 6th....and it went in!
After leaving the motorway however 1st, 4th and 5th were non existent but limped it to the garage.
New box, clutch and flywheel fitted and all is well. Old box stripped and apart from some scored/pitted roller bearings (whining) we found a shift fork laid in the bottom of the box.
Will get a pic of it but basically it has 2 locating dimples and a 6mm dia pin that had sheared off.
After talking to someone at work about it his 130 tdi Ibiza did the same thing a little while ago and managed to repair it by drilling and tapping the fork m6 then fitted a high tensile bolt.
So a cheap fix by the look of it so with a fresh set of bearings I should have a back up gearbox.
