I’ve been meaning to get a spare wheel for my 2015 Fr SC for years but never got round to it. Apologies for the following dumb questions. I assume the boot well will only fit a space saver? It has 17” wheels so do I need a 17” space saver spare rather than a 16” to fit over the brake callipers? Any recommendations please for where to get one from, along with the jack and spanner. Thanks.

Just looked inside the filler cap, which says either T125/70 R16 or T125/70 R18. So I suppose I’ve answered part of my question. Probably.

Yes, it will only take a space-saver but you'll have to check the size. It may take a smaller wheel diameter than the alloy wheels. I think a 16'' steel wheel will fit but you'll have to check.

Thanks. There are plenty of the 16” ones available online but not many of the 18”, especially with the oem foam insert which I’d like. Hoping someone will turn up who has actually tried the 16” on an FR.

Just checked my car. I have a 150 FR with a space-saver and it's a 16''.

Remember that the Mk7 Golf wheels and kit fit too.

Brilliant, thank you. Was your space-saver a factory option? I just got the useless can of goo.

No. The car came with a bottle of glue. I bought a Mk7 Golf spare wheel and jack kit. It wasn't expensive.

Clearance isn't an issue as the space-saver has to go on the back, which has smaller disks anyway.

Thanks for your help. I take your point about fitting the spare to the rear, although if I was on the hard shoulder of a motorway I’d probably prefer to fit to the front temporarily just to get to the next junction. Does your kit fit around the outside of the spare wheel or is it inside it? Some of the Golf mk7 kits look to have the tools etc around the outside.

It fits to the side of the wheel. I don't think there would be enough room inside a space-saver. Look for a kit that has a double-scissor jack, much stronger than a half one.

I've not had a puncture in decades then had two, in the same tyre, two weeks apart! The second was on the dual carriageway with a hard shoulder but I would not change an offside wheel on the hard shoulder. I drove the car along the hard shoulder very slowly until I got to an inshot where I could pull further off the road. Yes, I did swap a rear wheel to the front and put the space saver on the back. Both your drive and steering are by the front wheels and the space saver isn't ideal for either. It's also smaller diameter then the standard road wheel which puts extra load on the differential.

I’ve been driving around remote parts of Scotland with a can of goo in the boot rather than a spare for years, so I decided to get a spare before my luck runs out.
The 125/70/R18 mk7 Golf space saver looks to have pretty much the same overall diameter as my 225/45/R17 alloys so if I can pick up one of those with the kit then that would be ideal.

Yes, because it will. Punctures are more or less inevitable. I wouldn't buy a car which could not take at least a space saver. My wife's car is the ST and we always take that on long trips because it can take a full sized wheel. She and my daughter were in the car about a month ago and got a puncture. They had it changed in minutes because I've shown my daughter how to change a wheel.

I think that by law all cars should carry a spare.

I’ve ordered the foam holder and toolkit, just trying to figure out the actual spare wheel now. There seem to be several different part numbers for what looks to be the same spec 18 inch wheel. Anyone know if this, for example, looks right please? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/186439155548

Don't know but I'd look for one for the MK7 Golf. If you go onto a VW parts site and get the part number then search for that specific part on eBay.

That's the same size as my 18" spacesaver that I bought for my car which has 17" alloys fitted. The part number has different letters at the end but I'm sure that doesn't matter, mine ends in 'A'. Very sorry it's a 'B'!!

Thanks. The ones ending in B or AP seem to be 18 inch but when I look for your number ending in A it seems to mainly turn up ads for the 16 inch.

I’m going to keep an eye out for one of those, hopefully something relatively recent so that the rubber isn’t too perished. Have you ever fitted yours?
I've not fitted it, I bought it to replace 16" space saver so I could fit Seat Sound System subwoofer plus the added bonus of being very close to the 17" alloys rolling radius. I know it will fit as the PCD etc. is the same as my 16" space saver.
