So today, I received a speeding letter from West Yorkshire police. To say that I was speeding late at night.

I've never visited Yorkshire in my life and live right down in the south east of England.

I'm guessing this is either a scam letter ( have called police directly to inform them of this) or possibly someone has cloned my number plate and attached to a stolen car?

Anyone else been in this situation? I'm hoping that the letter is ligitimate and simply my reg no has been cloned rather than some scam group knowing my address etc

I deliver speed awareness courses. Cloned plates do occasionally happen. Write to the police and tell them that you believe your plate has been cloned. Tell them about your car and ask them to review the photographic evidence.

I was under the impression they send photographic evidence along with the letter, so sounds like it maybe a scam. However I'm not 100% sure, someone maybe able to confirm for definite. Hope you get it sorted okay mate.

I've seen letters from fixed speeding cameras that show the car. Mobile vans etc just seem to write and state the offence, road and time etc. I'd request photo evidence as clearly that should show a different car (although I appreciate cloned plates can be put on similar cars)

Yea I called west Yorkshire police and made them aware etc. No evidence was provided with the letter apart from date time. Opening times phone no were the same as what the police told me(last few digits of number were slightly)

Sorry. The NIP just says you were speeding. Some forces don’t even tell you the recorded speed. The letter usually says that you need to go to court to see the evidence.

Being from West Yorkshire, I've had a ticket from a mobile van twice.
Both times the letter advised a website and code to log in and see photographic evidence of the offence.
You should be able to log in and check the photo and clear your name that way

I deal with these for a large company. West Yorks used to offer a log in and PIN number on the NOIP. Or use too, read the NOIP carefully and it usually points this out. Greater Manc and Met just send a letter to provide details. One thing not to do is ignore as this is a automatic prosecution. You have the right of appeal and court appearance. Majority get quashed as the CPS do a threshold test and it’s not financially viable to take to court.

Yea there was a pin number and website. Will log in when home and have a look.

This is where you login and see a picture of the same car, with say different wheels

Ideally, get some proof that you were somewhere else at the time. Even a receipt for a store as that will have an address, date/time and provides 100% proof you weren't there

just logged in. Picture is blurry I can't make out reg. It is a cupra though I'm hoping the fact I have different exhaust tips compared to the picture (stock)may help haha

If it is a fuzzy picture, could be a miss read of the VRN . Reply with your details and attatch a letter explaining you were milesaway at that time and would they check if it is a miss read. Failure to give the drivers details at that time could mean a failure to provide conviction 6 points, hefty fine and increased insurance.

Same colour? Same options? Very probable that it’s either cloned or they have a set of fuzzy number plates 3D type and this further makes it difficult for the machine to read the plate, dependant on speed too. To be fair just writing appealing the fact the number plate is unreadable in the picture will normally sort this. obviously if you can otherwise prove your not there physically is even better. Dashcam? Black box ? We have a success rate of 96% on most cases of where there is a element of doubt, the constabulary also then log the number plate as a clone.

Yea looks to be same colour. Fortunately I had my exhaust changed 2 days before (which has different tips etc)the offence on the letter so have a invoice from garage that fitted it and pictures of the work carried out on that day too. So can use this as proof it's not actually my vehicle. I've informed local authorities too. Getting a call back tomorrow from West Yorkshire police.

One was stolen quite recently from Sheff/Derbys area (thread is on here somewhere) - wonder if it's that one with a changed plate?

I suppose check colour etc to see.

If it is that one I hope the police would like to know so they have more chance of finding it / nicking the offender.

Possibly. I've given west Yorkshire police a call and they have passed info onto intelligence unit and they have put a marker on my reg no. Wondering where my reg no would have been obtained from in the first place
