right i got the clocks out and took a look as to why my engine managment light doesnt work. its not lighting up at all and its not been blanked off or anything. also the seatbelt light doesnt work either. not sure if its the LED's so gonna change them. does anyone know what ones they are? did it once before on my saxo and they all worked so i know what im doing. need to find out what code they though first.

If at all possible I'd check for voltage on the LED's before risking the replacement of SMT components. But that's just me, I learned soldering when Veroboard was new - - - - -

i think they are smt10 or something like that but yeah i will try and find out what they are. its unusual for LED's to blow out though so im wondering if its something more sinister. gonna have a ago and see what i can do.

right they are smd-plcc2 and you can buy them on ebay. they are exaclty the same ones as the second series saxo dashboard. vdo make both dashboards. gonna change mine i think for blue just like the golf. i will put a guide on here if no one else hasnt already:clap:

Are the blue leds interchangable? I thought they run a different voltage/current, may be worth checking. I'm sure someones done it on a leon, might be worth a search in there.
You will aslo have the mismatch between the Blue clocks and the rest of the Red interior switches and climate control which may look a little strange?

Also the seatbelt light does not light up by default, I think it has to be switched on with vagcom.

yeah just thought about that:think:. might change everything over to blue. shouldnt be to difficult and im a dab hand with the soldering iron. gona check out the voltages but think they all run anything up to 3.2v and current is 20-30 MA.

Good stuff, think it would look great. Used to love the blue in my old passat. I've heard the Climate Control panel is the really difficult one to change though if not impossible?

You might find that the screw heads are all clean??? I,ve owned that car for many years and the dash has never been off. Only been into the fuse box once, just to check where it was.

I still think you are trying to find faults that are not there. Are all these lights supposed to light up??? on a T reg car. Always better to ask someone who actually has a T reg Tolly TDI S (same model) that hasn,t been messed with to run a comparison with theirs. I would have noticed if anything had suddenly changed during my ownership...I do tend to notice any slight differences. Are you comparing with inferior cars? This is VW, did you know that even in the 70,s their dshboards did a diagnostic to check if the sensors were working???

I'm gonna jump on the back of this one! I only have one working bulb on the dash of my 2.0L 1997 Seat Toledo Sports 8v and my company has now done the wonderful thing of putting me on night repairs for the next four weeks so I need to get this sorted. It the procedue the same on the Mk1 an how many bulbs do I need to change?

Well, I've checked mine out and have had a bit of a surprise.

When turning the key to power up the electronics, but before going to start the car, the dasboard lights come on for a self-check,
with the following exceptions:

  • Main beam and turn indicators on the dash
  • Sidelight and headlights square in the warning light panel.
  • Boot open warning square, top right on the warning panel
I'd not expect those to come on, they are just repeaters showing the state of your outside lights

  • Seatbelt light, top left square
The manual says this may or may not light up depending on the country the car was sold into. So, not worried there.

And I've saved the best till last.

  • Engine Management light "excess of pollution", middle row, far right. The CEL, the one we're all worried about.
The manual says this *should* light up as a self-test. I'm going to ask my local specialist independent VAG garage, who does all my servicing, what they can tell me about this. Is it supposed to light up, or is it, like the seat-belt warning, country-dependent.

Update.

Boot warning light comes on if I leave the boot open, so that's ok
Seat belt light doesn't come on at all, so I don't have a seat belt warning system, which is ok.

I disconnected the MAF, went for a short drive and there was no sign of life from the EML. I'm going to have to take the dash off to check the LED, dammit. Garage confirms that the EML should self-check.
