Spoiler Fitted

Managed to fit my new rear spoiler this weekend.

Originally had the low lip boot spoiler but managed to pick up the Evo spoiler cheap on ebay and got it re-sprayed.

However one thing that doesn't look good to me is the finish where the spoiler mates with the boot.

We had beige coloured Silicone to seal the holes but also applied some to the base of the spoiler to seal it tight from water. However the beige silicone now actually looks more like white glue

What would be the best solution?

I'm thinking of removing the spoiler again and trying to remove the silicone, then use clear silicone to replace the original beige.

Other option is just to remove the silicone all together and refit but would that lead to problems with rust etc??

this close up shows the problem area:-

Any thoughts appreciated :)

Hmm, how's the spoiler fitted to the boot? I am assuming a couple of bolts at each end and the middle? If so, are the nuts on the inside of the boot or inside the actual spoiler?

Yes, basically 2 studs either side of the spoiler and one in the middle. These then push through the holes in the boot and get secured with nuts.

Can't you put some silicone around the studs prior to fitting them on the boot to close the holes in the boot and to waterproof them, but just enough so that it does not show from under the spoiler legs? Additionally, you could put some more from the inside. Shouldn't that work alright? I assume water trapped under the spoiler legs but outside the boot holes should not be a problem as the boot is painted, and if the paint's been sealed correctly it should not corrode.

Exactly that was the plan to only apply silicone to the holes. However we then decided to also stick some on the spoiler base as when it's bolted down the Silicone then gets squeezed out to fill the small gap left between the spoiler and boot lid. It does the job in filling the small gaps that would have been left, but because of its colour it shows up. I'm also thinking of just masking the area and painting with a fine brush using touch up paint to blend it in.

Hmm, to be honest don't think touching up will make it substantially better, you'll probably not be entirely happy with the result. Can't you get like a really thin rubber washer/seal type of thing to put around the studs on the outside to sort of seal the holes from the outside, then seal with silicone from the inside. The problem here might be that the spoiler might sit a bit above the boot which will not look great.

I have the feeling I'm not being helpful, lol

You could always try the bath trick? When you fit a bath (inside a bathroom before you ask!), you use silicon sealant round the edge, then before it goes off, you run a wet finger round it to smooth it out. I reckon if you removed the spoiler, redid the sealant exactly how you've done it, then use a wet finger to get rid of as much as possible while its still left, you should be left with a very fine line of sealant, and that should look quite decent. That does depend on how big your finger is, probably your pinkie would give the thinnest result.

Yeah, what Slimy's saing sounds good, or you could take like a sheet of paper or something and try to go between the spoiler and boot to get out a bit more from in between so that it's not visible.
