Hi

Does anybody else hear a squeak/rattle when closing the boot on their ST? I noticed it from the start but assumed it was just the noise the boot mechanism made when closing. Now when I shut the rear doors or go over a bump the squeak raises it's ugly head. I can't be 100% that it's the boot catch, and I'm deaf in one ear, so having a hell of a time locating sounds. I'd be worried in case perhaps it's a slight movement in the suspension or something? Any advice or words of wisdom prior to me taking it into Seat would be welcome, so that I don't end up getting fobbed off or looking like an eejit. I haven't had any negative experiences at all with the dealers, however, no interaction to date has involved anything needing fixed and thought if I could identify the problem for certain, then it'd be easier to get them to sort it with no hassle. I'm only on 10k miles, and treat the car incredibly carefully (oil over 90, below 10mph for speed bumps, etc.), so there's no undue wear and tear issues to spark of.

Thanks in advance for the assistance.

Cheers.

This happens on my st fr. I've had it in twice to re grease the struts and it's happening again after the last repair. Just one of those annoying things I'm afraid.....

If I may weigh in here.

Yes I get the strut squeak but only after the boot has been open 20 minutes or so and then closed.
Yes I get the squeak on the road

On the road squeak is certainly the rear suspension bushes and if you empty a can of WD40 onto every pivot and bush you can see it goes away for a few weeks.

You can test this by getting your wife to sit in the boot with the catch released and the boot door resting on a thick car wash sponge with you dear wife holding the boot from opening .......not on a public road ;)

Go easy...I read that divorce can be costly

Problem rectified, after two trips

So, I dropped the car into the dealers on Monday, and collected it late afternoon. Upon closing the boot the tinny noise was gone, but the numberplate now jumped all over the place. I didn't think this was right somehow, they said come back if there are any issues... By the time I got home there were issues (4 miles, on decent roads). The noise was back. After spending a bit of time poking, prodding and investigating further, using the numberplate movement observed at the dealers as a clue, it dawned upon me that the screws fixing the numberplate in position were making contact with metal behind. Their 'fix' had been to replace the numberplate screws and to make purchase on the bumper bar (mild steel) with them. The noise was worse, occurring whilst going over bumps etc. indicating the initial screws probably had near worn away at the ends. the 'fix' was making the new screws purchase on the bumper bar. The drive home broke said purchase. I returned today and detailed my concerns, even the possibility the car may have been pranged in the rear, and insisted that I could watch when the bumper come off. Right enough the, the evidence was there. Seat prepped & repaired the two marks, same for a little rust at two welds on the bumper bar, refitted the bumper, used adhesive to mount the numberplate and claimed the drill used must have mad the marks. This claim was made even though the holes were already there and the new alarming judder in the numberplate when the boot closed, then subsequent return to the tinny noise, minus the judder, proved this not to be the case...

Problem solved, not in the most professional manner. I'm partially deaf, fully deaf in one ear, so the challenge of locating sounds is a big one. It was intermittent before going in. Only the 'fix' led me to it, so a silver lining I guess?

I can't say I'd give a sparkling review on this experience. The Technician working on the car was a nice enough bloke to chat to. I'm glad it's now sorted. One month before the end of guarantee I'll be taking the car in to the garage I use for my servicing etc. (Eurofix, Dunmurry) for a full check over to see if anything else needs sorting. May 2018 she turns 3, so at the start of April.
