Stage 1 remap REVO or APR TCU upgrade worth it?

Hi guys i have a SEAT Leon Cupra 290 with DSG. I have decided to go for a stage 1 remap with either REVO or APR. The price of the REVO tune is around £750 and currently APR are doing a 20% discount on their software which brings the price down to £575. Which tuner would you guys recommend?

The other question i have is surrounding whether or not to get the TCU tune for the DSG transmission which should cost an additional £600-700. I have heard about problems with clutch slip on the DSG without the TCU tune.

Thanks

So many threads about this already but andrewjb is a decent guy to go for advice he runs stage 2 APR on his 280 .

My opinion if your manual go Revo with the Sachs uprated clutch.
If your DSG go APR as there DSG tune has been out a lot longer than revos.

Both have black Friday deals though it's just looking out for them, I booked my cupra for a Revo upgrade 8 weeks in advanced and it fell on a black Friday

Both maps are brilliant

I'm yet to map my car too but I've been researching all the maps for months and made my decision. After looking at Revo, APR, and even custom maps I decided to get it booked in for an APR map and dsg map while the 20% off sale is on.

If you get the car mapped you will need the dsg software to take advantage of higher torque, APR do offer a lower torque version if you don't map the dsg but you may as well go for the high torque and dsg map, these engines can handle the power.

Both maps deliver the same power outputs, however as you have dsg I would say APR's dsg software has a lot more features than revos. Also revos stage 1 dsg map doesn't raise the torque limits of the dsg box, you need their stage 2 dsg map for that looking at their website.

Whatever you go for you won't be disappointed, my maps booked for the 1st September I can't wait :)

Thanks for the feedback. What is the total price you will pay APR for the tune?

There are still variations of the generic files from both Revo and APR if your going for the high boost high performance make sure your pockets ready for some upgrades

APR, Stage 1 doesn't really need TCU update tbh but if you have the cash get it anyway.

Would it be better I get the APR low output stage 1 remap rather than the high output one then as I would rather not pay for the TCU DSG upgrade

I thought you could only get low/high for Stage 2 tbh has been a while since I looked through the list of files.

High output will be fine for Stage 1.

I am running Revo stage 1 on my 290 dsg and have been doing so for almost a year without problems. I do not have the TCU remap and specifically choose Revo over APR do to the torque curve - APR's curve is much more brutal and steep and after all it is torque that destroys a gearbox/engine, not power... It has worked perfectly fine with the ecu stage 1 map and no tcu map. I did change the dsg oil at 30k km. which made a huge difference to the smoothness of the changes.

I think the problem here is rick users a hub dyno and its hard to get huge numbers from it and the cupra fwd tends to climb up the rollers too making it hard to read. I bet that car is a rocket rick is no run off the mill tuner he is very well respected in the vag community too I have spoke to him a few times and he's very knowledgeable guy. big numbers don't always equate to a faster car on the road too.

Yes Unicorn are definitely not run of the mill. Very highly regarded on the MK7R forum. Yes the bhp is conservative on that graph but many factors can have affected that as said. Here's a stage 1 mapped C280 he did not long ago.............

Sorry for the dumb question but as I have revo stage 1 the upgrade to stage 2 is free (for the software) is the any reason i can't go Revo Stage 2 for Engine and APR for DSG

None other than the shift pattern of Revo's tcu software is matched to the power curves of their stage 1/2 engine software. The same goes for APR, hence it might not give the full/best experience of the upgrades..

That's better, also it's a manual so it's easier to compare to my own. It's just the fact the one I posted was labelled stage 2 and it didn't make REVO or APR stage 1 figures and curves on the graph.

I'm not disputing your guys not good bro just had a fair few maps in my time and nothing came close to owning the Revo and APR

I wanted to ask you some questions regarding this but can't pm yet to here's my chance.
I am running stg 1 Revo (Apr dealer is 500 km away and Revo dealer is in my town - hence my choice) for around 15000 km so far, no issues.
Last mod I'm waiting for is downpipe and I'll go stg 2. I saw that you changed to APR Andrew, what were your reasons?
Now that Revo has the TCU upgrade(which I'll go for) are there any other reasons?
Also guys, what oil would you recommand?
I see that all UK folks are running Millers, but what about 300V? This is what I was recommanded by a software mechanic.
Also what tyres are you running? I'm pretty pleased with r888's after upgrading from pss.

Most of the Revo and APR cars that have gone onto Ricks rollers have not made the figures claimed by the software developers .

Also I would class Revo as a generic map just like superchips . They develop a map on 1 car and use the same file on hundreds of cars with little to no adjustment to allow for different engines and tolerances . I speak from experience with both the tuners I have mentioned. I don't have any experience with APR and know Ecotune up my way are highly regarded but I'll still be using Unicorn software when my warranty is up as I know the work he puts into every car he does .
