Ok I'm no pro just wana make a large chip on my bonnet a bit better and also stop rust. I have filled in the chip using the cocktail stick method and it looks ok. I have a silver car so it's never a perfect match . I am letting paint dry then I wana smooth it down a bit. I'm not going to use wet and dry as I really don't trust myself. Is there anything else I can use ? Also do I
Need to laquer it as that seems to make it look worse? Any tips appreciated.

Cheers

Stig...

I have exactly the same problem on my bonnet. The car came with a big chip out of the paint just above the central "nostril", the bit with the S badge on it. It had been patch-painted to stop rust, but still looked unsightly. I filled the depression with body putty, smoothed it with fine sanding sticks then painted with a Halfords chip and scratch system paint.

As I'm a plastic modeller in my spare time (so: not recently then) I have a range of foam-backed sanding sticks by Flex-i-File. However, similar items are available from Boots, for nail filing/polishing purposes. Graded from coarse (suitable for sanding off old rusty bits) to extra-fine to polishing sticks.

To finish off I used one of those scratch removing kits you see every year or so at Aldi or Lidl. The finer of the two polishing compounds took out the last remaining hazing of the finish.

The patch looks a lot better but still doesn't match the rest of the bonnet, since the metallic paint has swirled rather than being laid down flat. I might cut it back and try using the Halfords paint, thinned with cellulose lacquer thinner, in my airbrush. I can't think of another way to achieve a match with a metallic finish (Arctic Grey, S7N, in my case). Otherwise it's going to be Chipex.

If you've got any rust, use Kurust or similar first to prevent it spreading, then paint it.

Finally got the paint flat but my colour doesn't match either . I have Luna grey and tried both seat and another touch up paint and still no proper match but that's silver for you !!! I may get another touch up stick as my paint has gone very thick!! Any ideas of a site for paint match ?

Hi and thanks for the paints for you link !! i have just ordered from them. i like the idea that they mix laquer in with the paint so you dont have to put a blob on afterwards. just a quick question, ive got the G3 compound coming with it.. how do you use that lol ? and does it affect old paint aswell. basically i touched up a chip and it looks crap and it would be great to ge the paint out and start again or maybe i just go over the top with the new stuff.

looking forward to seeing the colour match and if its that goo i may go over my other chips.

thanks again..

The G3 compound is made by Farcela and is like T-Cut but stronger... its actually pretty effective by hand.

I would imagine they include it in the kit to buff out sanding marks but you might be able to soften / reduce a touch up "blob" with it as well.

The ideal way to treat a stone chip is to build the paint up with thin layers over a few days so that the touched up area is slightly raised from the surrounding paint. Leave it to go off and harden for a few more days (at least) then wet sand it so its level with the rest of the paint. Then buff with a compound to take the sanding marks out.

I've seen other methods of thinning the paint down and wiping over larger panels then buffing out but for small localised chips the first option is the best i think.

Thanks I will give it a go but sod sanding it lol. Think I will just try and blend it a bit. The paint is already on its way !!! Fantastic service thanks for site.
