This morning on my way to work on a fast A road the turbo boost just dropped out no fault lights nothing then it seemed like it was in limp mode the rest of the way to work.

but it was fine all the way home tonight.

just lately i have been able to hear a faint turbo whine on tick over as if the turbo is still running on tick over

Can be a boost pipe leak due to the clip joint seperating (poor design). Usual culprit is the lower pipe into the intercooler, drivers side.
owl hooting can be sign of impending turbo failure, although lasted 5 years before it let go.... :)

Right narrowed it down a bit more now boost drops out on sustained revs 3000 RPM+ no fault lights if i knock the engine off and restart the boost is back on.

with the turbo running on tick over I'm no closer to working that out the only thing I can think of is the vanes are not fully closing causing the turbo to wind up on tick over.

think it might be time to drop the turbo out and have a look and give it a clean.

I have seen that a turbo insert kit is available on ebay for about £150 might invest in one.

Oh by the way she's a 06 1.9 TDI with 92K on the clock

Got my ECU scanner on her today and on the pending codes I had a over boost code.

I have removed and cleaned the EGR valve today too and that was very coked up with oily deposits.

She seems to rev up a bit more freely now but we shall see if the fault returns.

I might try the mr muscle cleaner trick and see if that cleans the turbo out.

Might of cured it I took her out tonight and gave her the beens down the M5 red line in 3rd and no limp mode plenty of shite coming out the exhaust in puffs.

got a long run to york next sunday so we'll see how she gets on.

I need to spend some money on her this year lower arms, drop links etc need doing as they are showing their age now so might just get a new turbo for peace of mind.

I'd get a recon turbo rather than a "cartridge" type replacement. Mine was about £250 last summer.
Did all the F & R suspension last year, Powerflex in most joints and lower engine mount.
Just the lower trailing arm front joint is original as on disassembley this appeared sound with no give or play or perishing.

Listers SEAT Worcester have just spent time looking at my BKD 2.0 TDI (2004) and they reckon its the wastegate which means a new turbo required - even though 95% of the time we run on full power.

By the way - stop the engine and restart it and you get full power back straightaway.

SEAT want £2053 to replace the turbo on a car probably worth not much more than that.
what do I do!!

They probably do mean the VNT mechanism which is within the turbocharger assembly. Turbo either needs to be stripped and cleaned at a minimum, or a re-con or new unit fitted. Although i would hope that they would categorically know it is the fault before suggesting a replacement.

i'm getting my turbo replaced on Monday, found a garage in Redditch who have done a few of these
so I'm getting a recon replacement turbo for £250 +VAT then fitting and oil and filters.

Hopefully it also improve the fuel economy which has dropped to about 35 mpg now from high 40s when we first had it.
