Strange Whine from FR TDI

Hi All,
Now here's a rather strange prob iam currently having with my trusty Leon.

54 plate with 41k on the clock, iam the owner from new.

Its a increasing droan/whine from around 40mph & most noticable around 50
Doesnt matter what gear iam in, even i let it free wheel its just the same.
Sounds just like a wheel bearing type of noise.

So in the last week i had both front bearings replaced & its just the same.
I then decided to have the rear pass side one done also & guess what no change.
So due to the cost iam very reluctant to change the last one, because i dont think its that either now.

WTF could this be then ???

Surely the GEARBOX isnt at fault?

It Drives fine & doesnt pull in any direction

Just fitted new Dunlop SP 9090 Tyres upfront & the noise is no different before hand either.

Dunlop SP 9000's at the rear which are only around 40% worn.

I removed both front wheels yesterday to make sure they were totally clean, refitted them, & no difference.

my Car hasnt been in any Accidents & otherwise drives fine.

HELP !! iam stuck......

can you tell where about the noise is coming from? front? rear? or even side?

It sounds like upfront to me...
Its even there just before stopping below 30mph like a decelloration type of noise if you know what i mean.

Local Garage + 2 other friends all agreed it was Wheel Bearing noise...

It no different when Accellorating thro30 to 50mph even with 4 people onboard.

does it make the sound with the clutch pressed down? or not in gear while in motion?

It Makes the same noise if the clutch is pressed down or up & either in gear or coasting along in neutral
Exactally the type of noise a wheel bearing would do imho.

Stoneguard bent against the disc ... warped disc ...... worn pads ... have these all been checked?

Brakes are perfect & just been serviced at 40k
All original Parts still plenty of life left in them.

It stops just the same as it did from the first day i bought it

I have thought of everything i think ???

Doubt its anything engine related, Coz it doesnt matter if its tick over or 3000revs its the same.

Its def something to do with the running gear somewhere

So it's something that's making the same noise irrespective of engine speed but gets worse over 40 mph?

Have you had your CV boots checked and your CV joints ( inner and outer) inspected?

Surely they cant be worn???

There is no leaks or splits that i can see.

how would you tell unless there was a leakage of grease ??

I cant just go & replace joins/drive shafts unless i can tell there worn 1st.
Esp after these BLOODY Bearings wernt the prob

Thank fuk a M8 has done the work for me FOC & i can get all the genuine parts at TRADE also.

Spent £107 so far.

Does the noise get worse if you use full left or right lock on the move? YOu can inspect the boots for splits and if there was a split, you'd have grease leaking out of the boot. Should be easy enough to spot.

Is the noise audible - i.e. could you record it?

I take it the car hasn't been lowered and there is nothing fouling the drive shafts? What about the ABS rings - are they clean etc?

Hey! thanks again M8.
The Car is totally standard in every way.
ABS Rings are ok no error codes or lights on the dash.
Back Ring was changed with the rear bearing & i helped remove the front bearings & there ok also.
Turning the Wheels from LOCK to LOCK makes no Difference.
Infact driving slow doing that you cant hear anything wrong atall.

atleast 3 dif mechanics all said its a wheel bearing !!

Its been doing it for the last 5,000 miles to be honest.

& in that Time i had the whole Clutch & DUAL MASS changed by the dealer & it was doing it before that, just the same as it is now.
It could even been noise from the tyres, but i dont know how.
There spoton 32lb pressure.
Managed to get 25k from the 1st set of SP 9000's upfront so thats why i bought some more
altho there 9090's the tread is the same.

Its bloody annoying, just have the Stereo a bit louder & you forget about it !!

The only thing i can think of is that it's tyre tread related due to a bad camber adjustment - have you got anyone local to you with a Beissbarth who can check your alignment? What about someone with another leon / mk4 golf whos wheels you could borrow and see if it's tyre related.

There was some issue a while back on here with Goodyear GSD3 wearing in a 50p shaped pattern which created some odd noises at certain speeds.

what is a Beissbarth exactally ????

Iam considering having the wheels tracked properly becasue after both front hubs have been off & to pieces the steering wheel is just off centre when driving in a straight line now.

Was advised that the local SKODA Garage has good gear for this & it does all four wheels properly for around £25.00 so thats an option

Dunno if its that name you mentioned above??

The only slight wear on the old set of front tyres was on the inside of the pass side more worn than the rest.

Right had a chat with Beissbarth themselves.

You should give Benfield VW a ring on the silverlink trade park, speak to Paul Wincup in the service department and tell him Andrew Hewitt recommended him to you. Their machine is programmed with all the latest SEAT / VW information so you'll get a reliable adjustment.

However I can't guarantee the price they'll charge for doing it - APS in Brackley charge £55 plus adjustments.

I doubt it will fix any noise issues but it will set the car up perfectly

I went to my local ex Skoda Dealer on Friday & had a word with them before hand,
They have got this same beissbarth Tracking SETUP cost over £6.5k when new.

I took there foreman out for a test drive for his verdict on this noise?

He straight away thought it was the wheel bearings...
But they have been all changed !! Oh Bugga!!

He then said its gotta be coming from the Gearbox?
Main Bearing on the Layshaft ???

Oh Double Bugga!

So we decided not to do the tracking seeing as the box mite have to be removed & best idea was to check the setup after that was sorted 1st.

So if its a GEARBOX Fault? whats the crack with them does anyone know?

Whats kinda job once the box is out are we possibly looking at here ???

Any further guidance would be great

hi i have same problem with my mk1 leon tdi if its not bearings or tyres it's the gearbox
first thing i'd try is changing the spec of your gear oil maybe try something thick first or something
thin like atf i've left mine for now but will sort it out in summer let me know how you get on.

Came across your problem while browsing for tyres..so i joined ....5 months ago i had the same problem on a mini cooper , i had bearings changed ,i had a new gearbox all under bmw warranty and the noise persisted ... exactly how you described...it turned out to be the rear Dunlop 9000 which although only 40-50 worn had worn slightly more on the inside tread... have a good look

Looks like MICHELINS for the next tyres at this rate.........

Iam Annoyed but at the same time over the moon....
