Sump removal

I did a service on my cupra tdi at the weekend and the sump plug was covered in mastic so I feared the worst. I was right, it was bodged in with PTFE tape and the thread in the sump is knackered. A common problem I read on here :(

I've tried to take the sump off but two of the bolts are off set behind the fly wheel so I cant get a socket or even an allen key fitting on them. Any ideas? Surely the engine/gearbox don't have to be split?

I've booked the morning off work and hopefully borrowing a tap and die set to cut a new thread in for a larger sump plug but I would love to get the whole sump off to make sure no bits go in.

Im desperate any ideas will be greatly received!

Thanks

woody

Yeah that is what I will do but would like to get the sump off incase any crap falls in. My dad just suggested putting some grease on the thread cutter to catch the bits.

you could also flush through with some cheap oil afterwards before filling up?

Thanks for the input guys, ive been out there since and got the sump off!

For future reference there is a slot on the flywheel to enable access to the two bolts by the gearbox. My car was already up on drive on ramps so I stuck the car in 6th gear, jacked up the drivers front wish bone untill the wheel was off the ground and then I could turn the wheel whilst underneath it until the fly wheel was in the right position.

Off to get a new thread cut tomorrow and get some liquid gasket (nearest stealer is 30+miles away so cant get there) will let you know how it goes. Thank god its milder out

When I did n\mine I used a ball end allen key socket, there wasn't the same problem with the fly wheel getting in the way on the LCR.
Make sure you have the silicon to refit this aswell. I removed the pick up and cleaned the gauze as it was quite blocked with stuff.
