Supercopa Cr 170 - short journeys?

Hi All

I am currently looking for a new motor and have come across a nice white Leon Supercopa CR 170 with 15k miles. However I only drive 5 miles to and from work each day in traffic and then some odd longer journeys during the week to visit customer properties. I am concerned that I will have regular issues with the dpf not being able to perform it's regenerations and therefore cost me money to fix. I am well aware that with this mileage a petrol car would be a better bet but I am really struggling to find decent petrol motors and have considered the Cupra and Octavia Vrs (had one before which was great).

Does anyone on her have a CR 170 without issues when driving in regular traffic?

I like the motor but would rather miss out on it if it's likely to cause me problems.

Thanks

Mark

Know 2 that got these engines (passat and golf gtd) both suffer pretty heavily from soot build up cause off their short trips all the time, so i would advise against it and maybe put a little more money into it it that would get you a petrol instead (remember the cupra is a pretty different beast all together so its money well spent if you ask me)

At the end of the day it's your call but mine probably does less than yours will during the week with some slightly longer journeys at the weekend unless we go on a long trip somewhere. In almost 2 years of ownership my DPF light has never come on (touch wood).

Next time I hook up VCDS I'll try and remember to have a look and see how much the soot loading currently is because I would be quite interested to know with the short jourmeys it does.

The CR engine was designed to have a DPF fitted (whereas the PD engine wasn't - it was just bolted on afterwards). This is why you tend to see very few reported DPF issues with the CR engined cars.

I use to do 8km a day and 160 at the end of the week with 170 Tdi. Never turn on the DPF light.
This is the only issue i can imagine

A normal week I would be lucky if I do about 5 miles per day during the week and at the weekend it could be even less. It does get the odd blast now and again and I have had no DPF issues as of yet!

Forget the smoker if you do that mileage tbh. Asking for trouble. Diesels, even modern ones are complicated engines and diesel is, and always will be a dirty, oily fuel. Low miles and things will inevitably start to get clogged up. 5 miles each way and the engine won't even get warmed up which will do even more harm. If I lived 5 miles from work I'd be on me bike and the car would then be something sweeeeeeet.

My drive to work is a 6 mile round trip- I do that 4 or 5 days a week. At weekends I usually go back to my parent's (180 round trip), my girlfriend's (200 mile round trip) or a 100 mile round trip to one of our other offices (or any combination of the 3!). I had the 2.0 ibiza fr (60 plate) since October, and now the 2.0 Leon (170 version, 12 plate) for the last 2 weeks.

Never had the DPF light come on- I expect the regular weekend trip that both cars got/get helps with that. I guess if you're prepared to go for a drive to clear it out if the light ever does come on, you shouldn't face too many issues, but I'm no mechanic! Mine's an FR+ but I assume it's the same engine as the Supercopa.

I tried biking to work a few times- couldn't be dealing with the hassle of showering and packing extra clothes etc!

I would take my bike but I give the wife a lift to work each morning. Anyway, I live on the west coast of Scotland, you are lucky if you get one decent day of weather a week so bugger that!

Thank you for the reply guys, a big help.

I could most certainly take the long way back on a sunday when taking the wife to work but that is only about 15-20mins at 70mph on a dual carriageway. Would that be sufficient?

Would defo give you a chance to clear it's throat......

20 mins at over 2k rpm would certainly help sort the dpf out if it was dirty

To give you an idea of how quickly things can clog up my daily commute is 30 miles each way of 50-60mph A roads. Of course I never go quicker than this when traffic is light.............. :D
With this in mind my car should be reasonably clear of soot and build up. Yesterday I had the car ticking over for 10 mins as I waited for my son to come out of school. Normally don't do this but I wanted the heated seat on ;) as I was cold. When I accelerated out of town (gently) I noticed quite a lot of grey/black smoke from the exhaust. It cleared after a few hundred yards and hasn't smoked since. Food for thought.
