Hi guys. I currently drive a 1999 MK4 Golf 1.8 20vt, modded a little (all subtle stuff: this is it) but it's on 141k now, and I don't want to give it away after I've spent loads on it on maintenance so it's tip top... but it now needs wishbone bushes soon, so gonna do those, ball joints, track rod ends, top mounts... and it needs a little bit of paintwork on the boot mainly, and then more mods blah blah.

Basically, it will end up all being dead money, it drives well but the milage regardless will affect it's value.

Hence, looking at the idea of selling it for something newer. Now, never really considered a Leon before but quite liking the looks of the 2003 facelifted (I assume 2003 anyway) Leon Cupra.

A few questions... having owned a MK4 Golf, I know they are NIGGLY cars! Wishbone bushes, door modules (so locks/interior lights play up), I know on newer engines that loads of sensors can cause problems, window regulators, wiper motors, leaky rear washer etc etc. Do all these problems apply to the Leon?

Does the Leon have specific problems also? I hear of dodgy door seals and water leaks or something? Also quite interested to know if the door module problem is common on Leons with them being a 5 door?

What I need to know is, does the same apply to the Leon? It'd be a shame to replace loads of stuff on mine only to get a newer car and the same stuff need doing in the not too distant future.

Regarding engines/tunability... is it gonna be similar to the AUM engined Golf with ko3s, 210ish BHP from a stage one map and maybe upto 220-225 with a few other bits such as exhaust, TIP, 007p etc? I assume the usual MAF, coilpack issues still apply lol.

I am talking myself out of it as I type but they're not badly priced and I do like the looks of them.. I may even find a use for 5 doors! They do look a lot nicer with the facelifted bumpers/colour coded body.

Thanks all :)

EDIT, I'd consider a Diesel also... are they a good shout, any specific problems with them? Are there 130BHP and 150BHP options or just 150BHP? And do they map well? I hear of "chocolate cam syndrome" with some GT TDI 150 Golfs...

The Leon is a golf with a different dress on, the problems are still there.

personally like the leon styling better and less comon, every tom **** and harry has a golf

a facelift LC and LCR looks way better then a royal mail delivery van sorry I mean mk4 golf.

same problems as pointed above as it's pretty much the same car in different clothes

When you say with all the trimmings...

To get that kinda power I'm assuming we'd need:

3" downpipe, sports cat, front mount intercooler, TIP, 007p, decent panel filter, stage one 98+ ron map? How bad are they on fuel at that point? My Golf gets 30mpg around town and 40-45 on a run if I don't hoof it. It's about 190BHP not a great deal done though just cat back exhaust, APR remap for 95 ron, panel filter, well serviced, good plugs..

Well at least my checklist when buying the Golf can be put to good use again :D

Can anyone comment specifically if the Leon's suffer from plastic window clips breaking so windows dropping in doors? Any confirmation on the door modules not working or prone to failing, as I'm not sure if they're the same parts as actually used on the Golf?

Also finally just interested in this water leakage problem I've briefly heard of... otherwise thats probably all I need to know! lol :)

Not hard to get 40mpg+ at all, 65 in 5th on the motorway lol. I've had 48.5 on the computer before now and it's only a couple of mpg over in most cases when you work it out properly.

It only has the baby ko3 turbo, maybe that helps.

To actually get those figures youd really only need the bigger downpipe and sports cat with a decent custom map/ stage 2 and 98/99 fuel. I got 242bhp from that.

But the fmic, cone/uprated filter and possibly a new dv as if its the original its getting on a bit, will make the power more usable. Might be worth adding a tip but unless the oem one is weak or damaged Id not worry.

I never found any direct affect on MPG. If you drive it the same in terms of accelleration and top speed you may find it slightly improves as the engine wont be working as hard. Depends on how you drive.

Won't a stage 2 map be working the standard intercooler fairly hard? Or do they have a front mount as standard? Or just a side mount like the Golf's. Thats a really good result if thats all you'd done at the time!

I see this quoted loads and I'm probably being a little thick and going to kick myself when you say it... but what is a TIP ???

Intercooler Pipe or similar???

What part of they are a golf in a different dress did you not understand lol

Water leakage, same as a golf i guess the carrier seals perish.

Never heard of any Golf's leaking in, not 3 doors anyway mate... and I've only ever had 3 door cars. I'm only asking ;) Thanks for the link above.
