Interesting.

I read, briefly, last week that the Golf GTi / R is having a last hurrah with the same motive power.

No chance of an Ateca VZ5, I don't suppose. :-k :-k

Wow I can't believe they took my comments onboard and made it happen, so credit where credit is due!
As I've said previously, I'll forgive the facelift design if they brought out a VZ5 in the UK, so this is great news!

I'd take a Formentor VZ5 over an 8Y RS3 any day for the superior ride comfort and physical buttons on the wheel. We also know the VZ5 is way faster than the RS Q3 out of a dig, due to lighter weight and Cupra programming. Being faster than it's rival is always a bonus.

Hopefully they continue the existing structure to make those 4000 VZ5's as fully optioned samples. So I won't have to struggle with missing travel assist or 360 cameras, etc. on the used market.

There is the one small problem of the fact that I got bored and ended up with a DAZA RS3 anyway lol. So no matter what they do with the VZ5 it will never sound as good as what I have now... however even a OPF 5cyl still out-does all 4 pots and most in-line or V6 in character due to that firing cadence.

I very much enjoyed this video from carwow when they put the ABT Cupra Leon against the RS3, not a great deal in it performance wise.

I've driven both cars in standard and tuned form and my opinion has been mirrored by other drivers of them. The 2.0TSI feels quicker off the mark on the old bum-dyno but once that 5 pot starts boosting, it's pretty flipping brutal.

I'm gonna be seeing both the Golf R send off edition and VZ5 through work. It should make for some interesting road testing 😎

I do like the character of a 5 pot; although the only vehicles I've ever owned with one fitted were VW Transporters.
Still sounded pretty good for a diesel though.

Wonder when demo’s will hit the dealers ?

I currently have a 2020 Leon Cupra R ST ABT with 1800 miles on it from new and im in two minds to make the switch or not ,

Had the previous formentor vz2. Bar the electrical / tech gremlins it was a good car .

Not to go off topic but I can see Matt is driving a base spec 2019 DNWA RS3 in that video even without the sports exhaust, which technically makes it an even worse price comparison lol.

The quicker off the mark feeling is mainly due to the lighter clutch packs in the DQ381 in the Cupra against the DQ500 in the RS3. So whereas ABT have gotten that Leon far closer to it's potential from factory, the DNWA RS3 technically left the factory absolutely crippled by emissions regulations, specifically the OFP and a restricted exhaust cam, plus inferior mechatronics module on the DQ500 that gave it that softer more problematic launch control than what came before.

Beside that, I don't think the point should ever have been, which is better buy from factory imo. The point in this year (2025) is buying a used RS3 (or used BMW or Porsche or whatever!) vs buying new 2L 4 pot VAG for the same money better value? Which is going to depend a lot on condition.

I am very interested to read and learn about what the last iteration of the 5pot will be like on the VZ5 and Golf R now they've had years more development for Euro 7 regulations though, that will be interesting and bittersweet.

Not sure I can keep up with all these "editions" - July - Black Edition, September - Tribe Edition and now October the VZ5, Cupra are really going for it with the Formentor
Coming Soon;

CUPRA Formentor STANDARD Edition
Comes with whatever we over ordered or got offered for a good price, with a choice of a colour, a trim level that we had laying around that nobody ordered.

Priced reasonably close to the last non STANDARD model but at a premium price due to the limited numbers.

Also comes with all the extras we had left in the parts bin at the end of the shift.

😁👍

You're not wrong - the amount of owners I read about receiving cars with parts added like upgraded headlights and wheels that they didnt order or pay for and yet I fully specced mine and paid for every option :sneaky:
