best way about it,

Country roads, - have a bit of fun

motorways - stick at bang on 70

motorways are boring at any speed so make the most of the mpg from it, 70 in comparison to 80-90 is barely 5-6mins extra on a journey usually

I commute Doncaster to hull twice a week, 45 mile each way, sat at 70-72 all the way i hit 40mpg dead from a stg 1 LC, back roads and country lanes i still manage a good 31-32 after giving it some stick,

Did you manage 550-600 out of that tank?

Did you take pics of your gauge and the mileage just to keep us doubters at bay?

You sure you dont have a TDI badged up as an R;)

i did take photos but when my phone was running slow and google suggested a reset, managed to wipe all my pictures! Nice!

I got bored about 400 miles but from memory was somewhere between1/4 and half full... I will try an economy run tomorrow aiming for the magic 50 again and get a video of it up... Obviously depends on traffic etc... The trip to work is the only one i seem to manage to get anywhere these figures, i think because i know it so well i know where i can lift off the throttle and coast to hit perfect speeds for roundabouts etc, so hardly touch brakes the whole way...

Another point to note is the trips inaccurucy... I tend to find it 2-3mpg over, but still 47-48mpg is bloody good in my books! Just wish i had the patience to do it more often!

I wish it was a tdi badged as an R - id have a tdi any day if they revved to 7200rpm as well!

This weekend I had a long journey of a couple hundred miles. Since my faulty egt sensor was fixed I hadn't had a chance to see if I could beat my previous best mpg of 33, until now.

I took it really easy on the motorway at 70 mph and A-roads at 50/60mph with no harsh acceleration and managed to get an average of 40.5mpg! I was very pleased with that. It was still going up when I had reached my destination so another couple hundred miles and it probably would have gone up another 2 or 3 mpg.

:)

I know alot of people dont like this thread but I have been watching it of late as my LCR is going to be doing more and more miles due to the missus changing her job, I went from Stourbridge to Craven arms and back the other day and got 45.3mpg over a 70 mile trip, all country roads, (got the video of the trip computer on my phone too) I was driving quite sensible mind, but contantly getting betwen 35 & 40mpg lately.
I've notice that V power makes a difference, mine is standard at the mo and I rarely have the aircon on.

I have been reading this thread today and have a headache!!

I do care about mpg figures so that's why I have been looking around at the different figures. I have a TDi FR and bought it 2 years ago at the time when mortgage rates were high and money was tight so needed an economical car.

Recently I have been earning more and being on a tracker mortgage the rate has gone down significantly so wanted a faster car.

I have always liked the Cupra R and wanted one a while back so decided I was going to get one.

A Mondeo St220 came up for sale at a very reasonable price so I thought, whilst looking for a Cupra R I would get this as a bit of fun.

However, I cant get any better than 23.9 mpg and 240 odd miles to a tank. This to me is silly. On speaking with a mate who had a Cupra R and now has a Focus St he wishes he hadn't bought one as he was only seeing a best of 22mpg! Whereas the Cupra R was around the 30 mark.

So I think mpg does make a difference.

In relation to 99 octane fuel, are people using this to get better mpg? If so is it really worth the extra price compared to the extra mpg you get? I used to have a ClioSsport 172 and ran it on Shell Optimax and swore I could feel a difference but was it in my head?

As far as the speed kills debate, I agree with both sides to the story.

Speed itself doesn't kill, add in all the other factors, that's what kills but I would say the biggest killer is inexperience.

I had an accident when I was 19. (I'm now 30) I was on an A road, late at night in a 16v XR2I which had been lowered and had a boy racer exhaust. I was doing about 90 thinking I was driving good. I came into a right hander and half way through thought, crap im going to fast. So i backed off got massive lift off oversteer and panicked. I slammed my brakes on thinking this was what I should do but ended up locking up, spinning, hitting a hedge and rolling about 6 times into a field. I survived because of my seat belt (I have pics of the car if you wanted to see).

What factors were the problem in that accident?

Speed? yes to a certain degree however I know that corner can be done in a bigger car at the same speed ( I am now an advanced Police driver and drove the road on my course 4 years ago)
Inexperience? definitely! had I never got off the throttle mid bend the car would not have been unsettled and would never have lost control. had a steered into the slide and got back on the throttle I would never had spun.

Driver education is the key not indiscriminate speed cameras placed to get the most money from normal law abiding citizens. When I say law abiding I mean the ones who insure, tax and register their cars.

I would like to see more speed cameras outside schools and more Police on the roads to educate drivers.

Also, if it helps, the majority of accidents I go to is because of poor judgement and not paying attention. The cars they are driving are always middle of the road cars or cheaper older cars. Not high performance hot hatches.

Don't get me wrong, I don't condone speeding, I can't however I warn more people when I catch them speeding if their driving was ok, because these are the type of people who realise the errors of their ways.

However, if you do drive like a "hooligan" then please don't moan if you get done by the Police as it is your own fault.

Now bring on the Police bashing comments and the pig jokes, I have thick skin!!:help:

Good post Woftywoo... that bloody "hooligan" comment is going to haunt me for ever... I’m not a hooligan BTW, i merely chose the wrong word to use.

It's nice to hear a police officers view on the subject; I also like the approach you take with speeders, very refreshing. I found what you said about the majority of accidents you attend are caused by poor judgment and not paying attention very interesting, these are the stats we never get to hear, so thanks!

Regarding the high octane fuel, i generally get slightly better MPG with 99 octane and it generally feels nice to drive, smoother etc.. Although this could be in my head!

EDIT

I've just realised the video is 7 mins long i thought it just that first clip which is a TV advert. my comment only applies to that first clip!

RE: 99 octane - I for one buy it because of the combination of both better MPG and more importantly improved performance.... if you take it steady it does last longer than 95, and also is more responsive.

It is also recommended to use 98 octane or above on a factory LCR, add in a remap and low octane is not the best idea in the world!

As for the speed debate, it is good to see a copper with a decent attitude towards speed - I always hoped it was just the majority of coppers that were ar$eholes for doing you for going 56mph in a 50 etc. I agree with the 'teach rather than punish' idea as well, reduces hatred for the police if nothing else!

Not sure about mpg, but actually feel upset watching that, I don't want to drive anywhere now. Makes you realise how valuable life is.

mine frequently returns decent MPG, considering it mapped.

its not too bad around town really, usual MPGs day to day without driving like a wanger is about 31 to 34, on the motorways i frequently see around the 36 to 38 mark depending on the traffic. mostly at 70 in 6th.

Hardly, it's a complete waste of money that advert if you ask me. The sort of people who drive like that are not the sort of people who are likely to pay any attention to that advert, hence its a pointless advert. I mean who really drives like that?
afaik that's not an advert. It looks like a collection of safety adverts and real-life accidents put together into one long VT with a sad song on top.

Don't get me wrong though, that's some nasty sh!t. The advert accidents are enough to drive home (pardon the pun) the message, but those real accidents are just scary as hell.

Thats chilling epesaly the reall life ones and I'll put my foot down the same as anyone will but if I know I'm indangling any1 else by doing then I won't do it and to any parents who drive like that try thinking... What if that was my kid or my wife ect that's the message they need to put across not speed kills cox we all know that there's more to it they tottery to get people to think.. Wat if that was me or my kid then maybe the people that do drive in this manor will realize something?

Soz bout Gavin a lil rant there but one I got started I couldn't stop lol I only get about 350 miles to a tank

Ps my words are not pointed to anyone in perticular just my opinion
