Well today I replaced the thermostat, well I say replaced to my amazement when I removed the housing there wasn't even a thermostat there! :wtf: all that was there was like the lid part of the thermostat nothing else

The lad I recently bought it of said he had been running car for last year no problems so really supprised with having no thermostat! anyway I fitted the new thermostat what a pain in the arse as I dropped a bolt down alternator area jesus took ages to get it out :censored: finally got it out and everything sealed back up topped up the coolant that I lost started car and hoping for the water temp gauge to now work but I am still getting naff all  you can very slightly see it move about a mm but thats it left car running for about 5-10min while topping coolant up I noticed the water temp gauge light flashing red and I gathered it was due to low coolant and it was low topped it up and now its gone. Seems like the ecu is talking to the water temp gauge as its telling me low coolant so what the hell is the problem that its not working  could it be my actual expansion tank thats broke

really bugging me without a working water temp gauge :help:

anyone?

Takes me about 5 miles of driving (petrol) before my needle even thinks of moving, tick over produces far less heat than when under load.

Your right lee great news someone could have said take it for a drive :funk: about 2 mile or so I saw the needle moving! :funk: then it eventually just stuck at 90 on needle all time for about 30 min driving :D

So would it have done any damage driving the car without a thermostat??? After my drive I checked under bonnet and noticed the hose that comes of the thermostat housing was cold  the hose at bottom where you drain coolant this was hot, shouldn't that top hose get hot?

cheers

Not good for the petrol variety as it effects the ECU mixture and MPG.

Not up on diesels but I'd expect it to increase mpg now as the temp is what it should be.
Yeah the hoses is strange, been said about this on the Leon section before but if is working, leave it ;)

hope to get more mpg now be great [B)] maybe that top hose takes over 30min to start to get warm  anyway well pleased gauge is working now :funk: just got to hopefully fix dodgy cold starting by replacing my glow plugs now and i'll be a happy bunny :funk:
