Hi all,

The timing belt & the other bits i.e. the tensioner are due for a change on my 1.6 16V Leon (BCB engine). I've decided that I'm going to get a kit that also includes the water pump as I have read that it's recommended that it's changed too / might as well do it as it's right there while you're changing the belt at the same time.

I've also had a quick look on eBay but I'm really not sure which kit to go for as their are so many aftermarket/OEM brands which manufacture them, or is it best to do directly to the dealers to aquire the parts? (but I imagine that going directly to the dealers is much more expensive).

Thanks all - Liam

Kit wise you can't go wrong with something by dayco, quinton hazell, gates, the latter I have used a number of times and had no problems what so ever..... Although some listings don't list a water pump so that would have to be sourced on top, metal impeller is a must, although I did see a while back they have redesigned the plastic impeller ones, hopefully somebody will be able to confirm this for you mate.
Hope that helps!

Euro car parts is a good place to start. All the brands mentioned above are good. But I like Contitech.

Sorry to bring this thread back up guys,

I've been dealing with a mechanic friend who has offered to do the timing belt on my 1.6 S and he says that on my engine their is 2 belts altogether that are recommended that are to be changed, as well as the timing belt too. All in all inc. labour & parts (belts, tensioners & water pump too) he has quoted me £250.

However, on a slightly different note my main concern is what he warned me about this engine, he said that these 1.6 16v engines throughout the VAG range are a bit odd and unique in a way, but the thing he warned me about was that on these engines - at around 80k the rocker covers or something are very prone to failure and that it's a £500+ job to get them sorted out. Is this true?

Thanks all - Liam

You need to get a bit more clarification from him.

Rocker cover is just a piece of metal really that covers the top half of the engine. I can't see that failing?

Sorry mate, you're right I wasn't quite clear lol.

It's a friend of a friend who is the mechanic, and the the main friend is who I've been speaking with on the phone and I have just been speaking to him again about it.

He said that it's infact something on the camshaft block which looks like a rubber bush which is prone to failure and causes serious damage to the engine if not changed at 80K apparently? That's all he remembered what being told from his mechanic mate.

Thanks - Liam
