To MOT or not to MOT

It has come the time where I may finally have to say goodbye to my 2001 180 Cupra.

For no other reason except that I currently have too many cars and could do with the garage space. :(

Currently the car is garaged, SORN and has no MOT.

I am wondering whether it would be worth me spending the time and money getting it through an MOT and then selling it, or whether to sell it as is without an MOT.

To get it through an MOT it would need a new tyre due to a puncture (already checked not repairable), and a new battery.

The only other thing I am not sure about is the airbag warning light, I know MOT rules have changed recently regarding warning lights. I am fairly certain this light relates to a sensor under the seat and the passenger side airbag. Does anyone know how much a repair to that would cost I think it's a fairly common problem.

I'd be interested to know what the general opinion is would doing the work and getting the car MOT'd make me the money back with the sale or should I sell it without an MOT for a lower price?

It will sell better with an MOT I would say without an mot people will always assume,is there something wrong with it

I agree with Never2old, just make sure that you state that you've added a new battery, tyre, sorted out the warning light and have passed MOT all with receipts. Much more peace of mind for the buyer then in my opinion :)

all depends on mileage, service history and condition but without mot then probably £500 but could be up to 2k if in good condition with mot and under 100k miles

Thanks, it has been regularly serviced by myself so probably better quality care taken than a dealer. I think it's around 110k miles but then I haven't driven it recently so can't remember exactly.

Sounds like there still could be money made after gettin it through the MOT.

If only I had the space / money to keep it then I would!

Like the other guy says without mot people think your hiding something so it's not work much more than scrap or parts, for the sake of the battery and whatever else then £45 for mot just get it done and sold should be worth £1500 to 2k to the right person

£2k ? Not wishing to rain on your parade but it would have to be a pretty mint and tasty 2001 cupra with comprehensive history and some sought after extras/mods for that kind of cash.

Bouncerbeater what would you put a value on it as? Spec as per my signature? I'm guessing the car is worth as much as anyone is willing to pay but I don't have an idea of what they are going for these days.

The other problem is not tax and no mot means no test drive, even as a demonstration, and any buyer needs to trailer it away unless it's going to a pre-booked test. Too much hassle for me, I'd just go onto the next one.

Yep not mapped and stock exhaust and the older bumpers.

Matt very good point hadn't thought about a test drive.

I think getting an MOT on it is the right thing to do, and you guys are right allways way more attractive to buyers.

It's hard to put a value on a car when it has a lot of sentimental value! Had it 10 years! But I am realistic that my sentimental value is not worth anything to anyone else!
