I have just bought a trailer to tow my bmw e36, weight of th bmw is about 1100kg, weight if the trailer is around 650kg, would my leon FR pd170 be safe to pull this or would it be too much?? Thanks

It says 1400kg and my towing weight will be around 1750kg, will u get ****ed if I get caught??

The towing weight restrictions on that site will be what the car is capable of.
What you can tow will depend on what you have on your license. There is a limit to what you can tow without extra lessons etc.

I can tow 3500kg with my licence so I wasn't worried about that, but I was told the other night by someone that if your towing more than your car is capable of this is also and offence

Could be. Depends on plod I suppose. If it looks/is unsafe you'll be taken to a weighbridge.

Hmmm I know the overall weight is under what I am legally allowed to tow just didn't know whether the load would be too much for a leon

Check vehicle detail plate ( think its inside front door) for gross train weight ( GTW ) if the weight of your Leon with fully loaded trailer is more than this weight, you can't tow it. I've no idea what offence you would be committing if you did tow it anyway, but as motorists seem to be public enemy number one I'm sure plod will think up some heinous offence that will leave you incarcerated till you are old and grey . . .

If it doesn't look like it passes the common sense test, Mr Plod will escort you to a weigh bridge.

Expect at least three points for over loading.

When it come to this kind of thing I don't have much sense, a leon FR towing an old stripped out bmw e36 on a light trailer, to me that should be fine, but people are telling me it's not?? The trailer is a twin axle independent suspension caravan chassis with brakes, I would think it would be okay??

Each car has a maximum gross towing weight.
If, on a weighbridge, the weight of your Leon, BMW and trailer exceeds that, then you are overloading.

If the combination "looks sensible" then you are unlikely to ever be caught.

If a policeman see you and thinks "small car towing a trailer and car, I bet he is over the weight limit" the chances are that you will be escorted to a weigh bridge where the weight will be checked. If you are over, you will be fined and get points, just like any other motoring offence.

I think you are referring to actual weights when the 3500 rule refers to the total of the plated weights

I hope this helps ....

These rules apply to all B category drivers no matter when the test was passed

B category
Vehicle not more than 3500 kg plated GVW

B category towing
A trailer of 750 kg max plated MAM may be towed by a B category vehicle making a possible total plated MAM of 4250 kg
If a trailer over 750 kg plated MAM is towed by a B category vehicle then the plated GVW of the vehicle added to the plated MAM of the trailer (MTPLM of a caravan) must not total more than 3500 kg

Google - carleasingmadesimple.com/business-car-leasing/seat/leon/gross-vehicle-weight/
Take the GVW of your LEON and add it to the plated MAM (max possible weight) of the trailer and if the total is more than 3500 kg you cannot legally tow on a B licence
