How long would you expect a turbo to last for?

My car's a standard Leon TDI 110, 52 plate and 50,000 miles. I've had to put up with a right saga lately... I took it in with a power loss problem and the dealers diagnosed an Air Mass Meter problem.

After then taking it back twice (the first time they decided they part they ordered in was faulty), they've now decided that the turbo itself is knackered and needs replacing.

Really, really quite annoyed about this since they've mucked me around for a fair few days while they misdiagnosed the problem and they're claiming "age of vehicle" and "wear and tear" for the cause.

Now I'm sorry but I just don't buy that.

Should a turbo die after 50k miles?

A friends MK4 Golf Anniversary TDI blew its turbo with 50 miles on the clock.........

Usually, i'd say this isn't normal though, i would expect a non-mapped turbo to last longer than that.

They should go on and on and on but there are circumstances where they just fail (friday afternoon machines, previous misuse by other owners etc).

I wouldn't have said it should failed at that age, after all there are cars on here with well over 125k on the clock and VAG TDI 110s with with well over 250k on the clock on original turbos.

I personally would try a specialist or decent indy than the spanner monkeys at the dealer.

Where abouts are you in the country?

Shortly after I bought my Leon, upon seeing mine a friend bought one from a local small garage.

Full service every mileage milestone including SEAT stamps every 10k since purchase. Basically, a sweet motor. He's at 175k miles now, 2003 plate. Heavy mileage from previous owner as it spent most of its life going round the M25... apparently.

Makes me happy to know my 66k is tiny in comparison!
