Turbo timers!!

anyone here had any experiences of turbo timers? if so whats a good for a reasonable price and how easy for fittings etc o and where you get them from??

A search on "turbo timer" returns 4 pages of threads and most of them end up in a slanging match about :

1) Immobilisers
2) The fact that TTs are pretty much unnecessary if you look after your turbo and let it cool down before you stop the car.

i've seen some people with Scoobies fill their cars up and leave them running because of the turbos... bit flippin weird, is this coz the turbo timer doesnt switch off straight away?

yep thats whole point of them

yup the whole point of the timer is to keep the engine idling for a set period after ignition off so that the oil inside the turbo doesnt cook. its not a performance mod at all contrary to some peoples uneducated belief.

i know its not a mod so to speak but sometimes surely you have to leave the car straight away and cant wait around for another minute for it to cool down. there's many options but has anyone here seriously considered it??

not really, i live about a half mile into a 30 zone so by the time i get home at that pace the engine/turbo should be back to idle temps.

Your turbo already has a water cooled jacket that keeps running after you shut down....listen next time after you turn off the car for a high pitched buzzing....that's the pump working to cool it.

Modern Oils also mean that turbo is better protected....we have come a long way since Sierra Cosworths...big Garret turbo's etc some 15 years back....as I say that advance includes oil which are far far more effective.

I would also advocate cooling the turbo by driving slowly the last few miles.....every little helps at 800degC

i know the turbo timer is used to do that. but can it be over ridden? your not supposed to fill your car up wen its on... dangeous isnt it?

i personally wouldnt bother can conflict with alatms and immbolisers (m8's have had them), also as said just take it easy for last couple ofmins, u do have a water cooled one as ruddmeister says, and there not easy to wire up most have to be wired into ecu, and range from around £100-£400 depending on whatu want ie blitz hks or just pike and most of them have th option were it knows how hard it has be driven ijn last 5 miles and automatically sets the time limit or "cool down" and "oil flow", but i really wouldnt bother unless u get a boost controller with on built in there around £500 for apexi

If this car didn't have the water jacket cooling as mentioned above, I'd probably fit one (pump can be seen behind bonnet catch).

Personally I'd go for the Blitz DC DTT, think thats right with the built in boost gauge. Its modular as well so the main control box is hidden.

Not exactly a performance mod but a nice toy and saves having a boost gauge mounted in an unsightly position.

so long as you dont stop the car when the turbo is spinning, .i.e. on boost, then you will be fine , its the oil starvation when its spinning that causes damage.

the waterjacket simply circulates hot water back around the turbo, dont dribve on boost towards the end of your journey and you dont have to wait

Thats the way i play it.

CLifford alarms have turbo timers, you can get them fitted pretty easily, seen a few on leons now

The MK1 leon has this also, including prefacelift
