The cars been in for a service and everythings gone great, apart from its been brought to my attention that it needs front tyres. Its got a Khumo and a Marshall on the front. The Khumo is shite!!! It spins/smokes up at any opportunity which is great if i was a pikey or 18 again but I'm not.

So I need recomendations for tyres on the GTi, budget of around £40.00 per corner and they need to be good in the wet more than anything as the cars used as an A/B road blaster in all weathers.

I had Toyo Proxes on my first GTi which were great, however they wore through at a frantic pace, I had Uniroyal rainsports on the Cordy and they were ace, but can't seem to find them for the GTi. The tyre size on the car now is 185x55x15 but can i put 195x55x15's on without any ill effects?

Thanks in advance!

Ive got Kumho Ecsta KU31's on my 1.4 and I really like them, quite a grippy tyre. Although when I change them Im going to try a set of Toyo's next.

Ive heard Falken tyres are meant to be good, but Im unsure on the price of them.

I think mine had 195/50/15, that will be a closer match to the original rolling radius than 195/55/15.

I always put Eagle F1s on mine. Granted, I can't therefore say they're better than brand X Y or Z, but they were very very good. I never ran out of grip with them (alpine hairpins with 5 people and brake fade, no problems.....), and they were excellent in the wet (aquaplaning was never a problem, unlike the Fabia / Pirelli P-Zero Nero combination I have now).

Yes they're a bit more expensive (budget £50/corner) but for the sake of a fairly small premium, I always felt it was worthwhile.

195/50/15 will be a good replacement for the 185/55/15s and as they are a more common size are generally cheaper. Ive heard good reviews of falken 912's and they come in at around £35 a corner fitted if you find a decent place.

I crashed my bora because of the kumho KU31s :(

Uniroyal rainsport 2, Goodyear eagle F1 and Pirelli P zero are the only tyres i'd buy now. I have faith in all 3.

I run toyo T1Rs in 195/50/15 flavour and cant beat them. Good in the wet and the dry, it gets driven quite hard and never twitches! Also Yoko prada spec 2s are good just dont last long.
Plus i got my Toyos for £25 a corner fitted :D

I've always loved the Goodyear F1's, I've found Kumho's a good tire I have them on my passat and before then it had a nice set of runways thanks to the perious owner and they were shocking in the wet!

Kumho's I have found good, even now I have fitted Kumho's to my Ibiza from the Goodyears... all well there are Kumho Motorsport tyres so it's a different league.

Maybe that one wheel is spin because it's on the shorter driveshift? Drivers side wheel? or it's your inside wheel on corners? And tbh I have always been against having different make tyres on the same axel.

Finding a local independent tyre specialist i've usually found they can match/beat online prices and will do cheaper fitting.

You've sold me on the T1'Rs at that price! So i take it going for a little wider tyre wont affect anything then and it will just fit on the whell and fill out to its width when inflated?

I'm totally dense on tyre sizes!

exactly mate, i had to double check that, £28 for toyo's? watch you feel like your stealing them lmao

well the standard tyres on yours was 195/50/15
the standard on the multispoke ronals were 195/45/16 (more or less same rolling radius)

someone has changed them before you

won't make a difference, i know someone running 205's on his multispoke ronals

it will be closer to standard mate :)

Standards where 185/55/15 Suj. But 195/50/15 will fit perfectly and are one of the most common sizes on earth at the moment so they are cheaper by a long way.

you sure mike? as everyone i know with 5 spoke gti's (8v) had 195/50/15's

there even was a thread in here a while back?

Yeah owners manual says it too Suj. Just most people are reccomended by tyre centres to go 195/50.

i stand corrected then mike lol, i really thought it was that

like you said tho...for that price, i know what ones i'd put on :D

i didn't like vredesteins when i had a pair, wasn't as grippy as toyo's/yoko's IMO (for price wise)

my mate has the Kuhmo Ecsta's, and loves them (on his 200sx pushing out 320bhp, he said very good grippy/long lasting tyre) :)
