A bit of nerdy post but just thought some may find interesting.

I recently had to change my front tyres on my 1.2 FR due a puncture in one, and thought I would measure how much tread I had used to look at the wear rate and get an idea how many miles I would have had left in it.

The fronts were measured at having used 4.5mm and rears were measured at 2mm used (based on a new tyre having 8mm tread).

The mileage on my car was 10600 miles so I worked out that I was getting 2355 miles per mm on the fronts and 5300 on the rears.

This then gave me a projected life of 15075 miles for the fronts and 33920 for the rears (this would be the tyre from new until reaching the legal limit of 1.6mm). I had about 4500 miles left in the one good tyre so thought i'd keep it just in case I get another puncture.

The tyres in question are Bridgestone Potenzas 215/40/R17 that came with the car when I got it new, to replace them I went for Uniroyal Rainsport 3's as i've had the Rainsport 2's in the past and absolutely loved them. It will be good to see how these compare.

In terms of my driving I wouldn't say my tyres get absolutely abused, I enjoy blasting down the twisty lanes on the way back from work, who doesn't? :) and they have a fairly normal everyday life so im quite pleased with the projections i'm getting.

It'd be good to get your thoughts and opinions.

I'd have thought Bridgestone's would last longer than 15k on the front of a small car, quite surprised by that.

sounds about right to me.

My last 3 cars have been roughly the same spec. Front engine, fwd, approx 140bhp and approx 1200kg.
15-16K miles from the front tyres and at least double that on the rears. One set of Pirellis did 40K on the rear. Thats from premium brands - Pirelli, Goodyear + Michelin.

1 time I bought pishy Toyo's for the front and they only lasted 12K miles and went seriously 'off' after only 8K miles.

My last Ibiza, a 2010 1.6 Tdi sport had one of the original front tyres still fitted when I sold it, the other was replaced due to a puncture. The car had had winter tyres fitted to I can't be 100% accurate with the milage but I would say the original front tyre probably did about 35,000 and it was no where near needing replacement.

So I would say 15,000 is not that good really!

I've done 16K in my 1.2 TSI FR since new and the fronts are nowhere near needing replacing. This is with a mix of motorway and 50-60 MPH A roads which I don't tend to hang around on... I'd be surprised if they don't last upwards of 20K!

I would say that 15K when playing most of the time is fairly normal.

I remember having a set of Yokohama A008 tyres on my MK4 130TDi ( 180hp remap & 312 brakes ) - drove it like I stole it and got through the front pair in 3000 miles.

Good to hear different opinions and experiences, on my old Mk4 Ibiza and my first car, a Punto, which both generally ran on cheap crap tyres (being a student) I was getting around 10k miles out of a set of fronts hence why I thought 15k on my current car was quite good.
