Uneven tyre wear

Hi,

Need to replace my rear tyres as they now look well worn, but on closer inspection the outside tread was close to the wear indicator, however every run of tread moving inwards gets deeper and deeper, the furthest inside tread line is quite deep so looks like uneven wearing on the back tyres? (pressures are fine)

Cannot see the front wear trend as had new front tyres fitted when I got the car.

Anyone elese had uneven tyre wear?

Got the car booked in for a full 4 wheel alignment on Thursday to get it checked b4 I stick some new F1's on the back.

Sounds like an alignment problem to be honest. Hopefully the 4 wheel check should help, if not get it in for a full geometry check somewhere so you can have the toe, camber, alignment etc checked as well. Worth doing every now and again IMO.

Yeah was hoping that as don't want it to be another "Characteristic" of the Leon!

As for the full geometry check, thats what I have done, full jobby done with b4 and after colour printouts on a Hunter system, the place I use costs between £35 - £50 depending on how much adjusting needs doing to the toe/heel/camber/thrust angle's etc.

Sounds good. I use SuperTracker in Southampton. They are the company that make and supply the kit many garages use. Luckily they are based in Southampton and are happy to do full checks like this... and what better people to do it than those who make the kit that other garages use?

Had that happen on a set of BrandNew Dunlop SportMAXX.

2000km and the outside was all clean.... Im really pissed.

Well had the aligment checked yesterday and it was OK.

Front was spot on, the best he had seen in a long while the chap said

The back was spot on apart form the Toe, which was out slightly, they could not adjust this however as the Leon back axle is a one piece jobby, so only way of adjusting Toe would be by adding shimms but this also couldn't be done as it would rub the disks.

He did say however that the uneven wearing is no where near as bad as I thought and on closer inspection by me on the ramp he was right, just a slight difference in wear on both the outer sides, this due to the toe being slighlty out, so nothing to worry about as tyres would need changing anyway, as by the time the outer tread was low enough to change then the inner tread would also be at legal limit.

Cost me £35 + VAT so £41 for the setup and inspection but at least I know I am running true, or as true as the car can be

Another factor of uneven wear is wrong tyre pressures.

Very true, although *usually* that causes either the middle of the tyre to wear quicker (over inflated) or both edges of the tyre to wear quicker (under inflated).

One side only wearing is usually a tracking and / or geometry issue.

Yeah I check tyre pressure every couple of months, use a digi tyre pressure machine at the local texaco and then got a Draper digi gauge to check, run all 4 at 33.

Plus when the equipment is added for the Geometry alignment each wheel monuted sensor is attached to the tyre valve to check all pressures are the same

thanks but that says its normal lol. my offside trye is bald on the inner n outer as well as the centre and in some places its got gashs in and on some tread chunks missing out of it.

Replace it now! Put the spare on. In the current weather that will be lethal, as well as illegal.

Gashes and chunks missing? Severe abuse, track day or mucking about on rough tracks. You won't get that from worn suspension or steering.

yes ive done that and the tyre is getting replaced tomorow, its not been thrashed its had the bit of hard driving legally,i cant understand why the drivers side is fine tho,
