VAG COM help - cable

pretty much since i got my copy of VAG COM and eBay cable, i've struggled to connect. Usually takes a couple of attempts to get it workin, however, tonight it wasn't picking anything up.

Sometimes in the past I get a bubble in the system tray, kinda like detecting new hardware. This time nothing happens

Could it be my copy of VAG COM or the cable?

I always get the window error pop up, that says something like "interface not detected"

Which version of VAG com and what cable have you got. It could be that the cable isn't compatible with the version of software you have. Cable if its an ebay job then it will be compatible with 303.1 or 409.1 but if you have down loaded the lastest version which is 805 it wouldn't work.

Is the lead compatible with 409.1 some ebay ones are only compatible with 303.1? I'm guessing it's a USB and you have the drivers installed? Have you tried other USB ports? Could be the leads failed

tried all the ports. it's connected in the past. only used it a few times.

it's never been a simple "plug and play" like Caveo or JBS's

Could also be anti-virus settings, something funky with the driver, and then there is always the problems that most aftermarket USB interfaces actually emulate a serial port.

All these can lead to flaky operation. You could also try changing some of the comm settings in the options screen of VAG-COM.

Simply put, some installs of these aftermarket cables prove to be flaky. The timing required to talk to the electronics in the car is rather strange and takes a good hardware design to make it work. This is one of the major differences between the Ross-Tech interfaces and the aftermarket ones.

simple answer being, I need to buy another cable then?

I've been to control panel > system > device manager and then "view by connection", but can't find it in there anymore.

will look at re-installing the cable software. may be a new cable required
