VAG diesels noisy?

As title really.
Really pleased with the 2.0TDi Stylance.
Love the style, really like the interior, nice touches like the wipers, rear door handles, red & white illumination etc. :D It goes very well, plenty of power and reasonably economical but must say you can certainly tell it's a diesel.
Not trying to have a go about Leon's or any vehicle in particular but
I drove a few different cars before getting the Leon, a golf (1.9 and 2.0Tdi), A3 (1.9 and 2.0Tdi)and a Honda Civic 2.2cdti and recently had a short runout in a Focus 2,0 Tcdi diesel & maybe it was just me but I felt that all the VAG versions seemed to be noisier than the others. Is this a valid comment, I mean is this something that the VAG cars are prone to? Do they concentrate more on reliability and performance?
The Civic especially was very very quiet, are there plans to make the later VAG diesels quieter?

Got the engine cover fitted recently & that has improved things slightly.
Is there any other way to "deaden" the noise on the Leon at all?

i don't find the diesel that much noisier on open road driving but i have to agree it seems noisy compared to others around town.

Notice you said you had had the Engine cover fitted how much did the engine cover cost you as i'm thinking about investing in on makes the engine bay look tidy.

Agreed.

I find the Leon noisy at idle and slow speeds but quieter at 80-90mph on the motorway. Thats compared to an Octavia and Audi A4 i've driven with the same engine.

Its something to do with new technology. I asked the question in the General Off Topic chat a while ago as to why diesels make the noise they do. VAG engines aren't using the new technology that Honda etc are using

Hondas are quieter but they are for old people.. There's nowt better than hearing the clatter of a reliable diesel workhorse..

That new civic looks ghastly in my honest, northern opin. LOL

Millers Diesel Sport 4 has made a difference to mine. Noticably quieter at idle than before.

Just do a search for Millers or look in the TDI section.

iwas was previously noted in the press that the VAG PDs when they came out were noisier than other similar class diesels. So its not unheard of.

The VAGs use a totally different injection system to all the rest of the market which are using Common Rail which could be accountable in some way i guess. But my understanding is that the PD system allows for higher injection pressures and more injections per cycle which in theory should reduce noise what with pre and post injection etc.

That's all that matters:D

I thought that the technology used in PD engines was more advanced than common rail. Wasn't the FSI system in the new petrol engines a spin-off from PD?

The above statment could all be nonsense and if so I appologise. The knowledge base that is SCN will no doubt provide a better explaination in due course.:hide:

It was a dealer fit:shrug: through the lease company, not sure but I think the cover costs about £75 to buy seperately, looked easy to fit tbh.

Not sure if having the cover fitted has made a massive diffference but I think the tickover noise is quieter but in some ways the around town noise seems louder, I wonder if the cover is vibrating and causing this!

The 2.0TDi or the 1.9TDi?
I found on test drives the 1.9TDi was very noisy in both the Leon and an A3 but less so in the Golf tbh. Just been driven around in a A4 with I think the 110 or 115bhp 1.9 engine & that was fairly quiet. Do you think the soundproofing is sometimes better on other models?
Is there a way to soundproof under the footwells for example to dampen the noise down inside?

Without doubt the VAG diesels are a wee bit more noisey than the new engines from Honda or Ford but I think this is more noticeable at idle, once you are on the move the engine is as quiet as a 2.0 FSi - this is based on my ownership experience with both the 2.0 FSi and the 2.0 Tdi. I would note that the FSi in fact was noisy at idle - the additional surge of torque from the diesel is mind blowing and well worth the extra cash.

Of all the cars I've owned, the most underrated engine VW have produced is the 1.6 16V (125 BHP) unit they put in the Lupo GTi. An absolute gem and it would have been brilliant in the Arosa or Ibiza.

I have a Leon FR 170 tdi and around town its quite noisy but once on an open road or on motorway its really quiet ! Performance is brill ! Its my first diesel so i wasnt sure if it was noisy or not. I dont think its actually that noisy its just a different noise to petrol engine.

Anyone have a photo of these engine covers? Do they look anything like this?
