VCDS won't connect to my LCR :(

Got the latest version of VCDS, with a proper Ross-Tech KEY-USB lead, on Windows 7 x64. It won't connect to my LCR, but works fine on a LC TDI. On the TDI, Baud 1 try 1 fails, but it then switches to Baud 2 try 1 and works. On the LCR, Baud 1 try 1 fails, but then it goes to Baud 1 try 2 (then 3, and 4) which all fail before an error message saying can't connect.

VCDS sees the cable, and if I use the VCDS test function, it gives me the right info (it knows it's a KEY-USB lead, knows what firmware version it is, and says that both K-lines are OK. But it can't connect to any of the controllers, and can't connect in OBD2 mode. Tried another laptop just in case, but the second laptop won't work with the LCR either. Disconnected the battery for about 10 minutes as a last resort (as I wanted to read the fault code causing the EML) and now the EML is gone but VCDS still won't work.

Any other ideas?

I'm going to try the obvious, have you turned the ignition on? :)

Does your lead have some sort of light on it, to show when it's connected? Perhaps it's not making good contact with the sockeet?

We had the ignition on all the time while plugging the cable in and out and wiggling it and whatnot, so I don't think it'd be that.

Dougie did find last night that (we think) we must have dislodged the hazard switch connection when we pulled the surround off (it's a 210 LCR with the double DIN satnav, if we don't pull the whole double DIN surround off the connector isn't quite accessible enough to get the plug in, unlike the models with the single DIN console and the diag port behind the little cutout) as his indicators weren't working after giving up and putting everything back together. I asked him if his hazards still worked, thinking faulty hazard switch/relay, and he texted me back to say that yes the hazards worked, and after he'd put the hazards on the indicators had started working fine again. But the hazard relay doesn't have a connection to the ECU at all on the Mk4 does it (hence the lack of one touch convenience signals) so it's not likely to be that is it?
