Vibration at 60mph +

Hi all,

For the last 4 months i have had this real annoying vibration through the steering wheel at 60mph and over, sometimes can feel it at lower speeds but not as bad.

Anyway i was due a service so took it in to Seat dealer and had cambelt done while i was there, they found a few minor problems e.g track rod end, roll bar, cv boot joint, had all these jobs done but vibration has not gone away.

Tyres were new in december, have had them balanced and aligned by kwik fit (might have been a mistake), and problem still exists, so i also banged new discs and pads to front, still nothing changed.

Today i was out early and the car just seemed really poor to drive, pulling to the left, sluggish acceleration and harsh ride (might be normal that one), really pi****g me off, i need to know what it is.

Could kwik fit have botched the balancing, any ideas would be great....

I'd check the discs and pads, if one is binding then that could cause pulling and sluggish acceleration. Some calipers don't like being wound back in to accept new pads, and you might have uncovered another issue.

The harsh ride could be the roll bar, it could also be something as simple as too high tyre pressures.

Sounds like wishbone bushes/balljoints perhaps. Does it pull to one direction under acceleration, and then back to the other on overrun?

I hope not calipers dont come cheap, i will take a look.

Roll bar was sorted with the faults Seat found, tyre pressures are 32psi all round on 205/55/16's, car is a mk1 leon 1.8vt sport.

Doesn't seem to happen under acceleration from what i can tell, if i let go of wheel for a sec it just starts drifting across to the left.

I am going to get the front wheels balanced 1 more time to make sure it was not a botched balance, if that does not help, calipers could be the culprits.

If you can get to a higher speed around 80 ish and it goes, ie you can "drive through it" it's wheel balancing.

Not tried to push it as it shook like i was on one of those weight loss machines.

Have had front wheels re-balanced today at another local tyre centre, and they said my front right tyre was out by quite a way, also my left tyre was also slightly out.

Has improved the ride a bit, vibration is still there slightly, am going back tomorrow and getting back wheels re-balanced also, hopefully should sort it out, wish me luck lol.

My number is 01287 653112, basically i had my wheels balanced and aligned at one of your centres, had to go buy new locking wheel nuts because they said mine were worn and only dealers supply them now, what do you want to know?

As Lee said, get it checked out by a tyre/wheel pro / mechanic mate, doesn't sound safe.
