Hi,

I've been to look at a MK2 FR today, really nice but the MOT states an advisory of 'visual smoke test' obviously it's passed it's admissions and the salesman didn't have a clue what it was so could anyone tell me if this is one to avoid?

Also the mileage is 70k and I've always taken that the belt and water pump should be changed at 60-80k but he's standing firm that this doesn't need doing until 90k if anyone could advise?

Many thanks!

hahah thats convenient

4 years or 80K IIRC in the FR TDI.

Tell him u want it done. you test drove it yet?

Test drive it and compare it to another one? that will give you an indication as to whether the DPF has been removed

Sorry this may sound dim but I know know too much about the DPF's so is it a part that gets removed or deleted from the car's mapping? If it has had a delete what effect does that give?

What exactly does the visual smoke test mean? If it's smoking too much do I need to be worried about an oil leak anywhere?

No not test driven it yet, plan to do that Thursday when I've got chance. There's no record of a cam belt change at any stage in the history and it's an '07 car.

DPF = diesel particulalelrertere filter

basically on the older PD engine 06-09 IIRC the DPF sometimes caused an issue, so people got it removed and then a stage 2 remap, which included removing it from the ECU if that makes sense.

If it is really smokey, then it could just have no DPF

an 07 plate with no record of cambelt change? I'd stay clear or at least insist that they do it

either way, it is WAAAAY overdue. yeah it might not be upto 90k like the **** head salesman says, but its over 4 years!
