the are afew of me and my mates talking about getting these cupra's and one of the lads was talking about a wastegate to go on his will this work on a standard tubo and which is better for the car?
Wastegate just keeps boost levels safe and is controlled by the actuator. As far as I know, every turbo needs one.
If you are talking about external wastegates ie. a separate unit to the turbo, then they don't really seem to be used on the 20vt engine (correct me if I'm wrong??)
You won't get that from a wastegate though... it's caused by the pressure difference when closing the throttle forcing the air backwards through compressor wheel/air filter. It's a common misconception that it's "wastegate chatter" but is really compressor surge.
I dont think you can get that noise from the 20vt engine as it has to run the diverter valve. Unless you spend some money on engine work etc. If he is after that noise tell him to buy a ford!!!
TBH 'wastegate chatter' as well as being a common misconception as to what it is, gets boring after about 3 gear changes. I've been out in several RS turbos and Cosworths to know what it sounds like and as much as people rave on about it I would prefer the sound of a good dump.
I had "chatter" with my Glanza -- Loved every second of it, couldn't beat a little flutter when passing by a honda! Under high boost applications you'll be damaging the thrust bearing... but never did me any harm and I ran mine like that for a year.
alot of cars can run without a DV etc...
norris designs actually remove the dv off Evo's as one of the first modifications they do before they carry out any work, because of exactly what acid says, no lag etc etc, if you can change gear fast enough the turbo will keep spinning without stalling (chatter) so iv been told, how true this is, i dont know
what i do know is alot of well respected people on here from tuners/even none tuners etc etc will probably have a heart attack if you told them you blocked off the dv for the "chatter" noise on a 20vt
im sure someone will be here soon with a more technical explanation on why its a bad idea .....
i done it for about a month, but i then had a prob with car so swapped it bak (ended up not being coz of DV) neva took it off again then i took engine out!!
fair enough, but i would exactly call a month a good trial would you?
its just my advice, and my advice is to stay well away from making the turbo stall or installing a atmospheric dv for that matter, keep the dv and make sure its a recirc !
how you take that advice is up to you guys ........
